► Radiator top hose failures

I had to take off the side panel to get enough purchase to tighten the hose. The bike's now booked in for a 'proper' repair. Coopers need it for two days which makes me wonder what's going to happen.

I spoke to Bahnstormers about the problem and the 'PUMA' fix on the BMW system is to (surprise, surprise) Micky's fix of roughening up the stub of the pipe before refitting. No news of longer tubes or armoured tubes.

exactly what I had done on Monday Tim. Hurst's hadn't heard of armoured pipes for it and said the only fix was to roughen up the pipe. I'm sincerely hoping that's it sorted, because i've spent many many hours by the roadside hoiking that thing back into place and have had enough of it. It's crap riding knowing that with each mile it's sliding back off.

two questions

1.are we any closer to knowing why its doing this?
2. have bmw admitted its a problem yet?

cheers

OK Good news guys! i can answer my own questions here!

OK First up, the hose is too short

secondly Big News-:thumb2 BMW HAVE RELEASED A FIX IN THE FORM OF A NEW LONGER HOSE!:thumb2
and main dealers should have it in stock.

Thirdly MANY, MANY THANKS to Bath Rd (Bristol) Motorrad who not only told me they knew about the fix AND had a replacement hose but also did the job for me this morning after only a couple of hours notice. They upgraded my ECU with the latest mapping as well!
:clap:clap:clap

Looking at the new hose id say its about a 1/2" longer than the old one and fits tight up against the lugs molded into the hose spigot casting.

Fingers crossed, but i hope thats it fixed.

If anyone cant get any sense out their dealer i suggest you ring Mike at Bristol Motorrad as he knows all about the problem and was extremely helpful.

all the best

Interesting news. So if your hose already fits tightly up againt the lugs (as mine does) maybe it doesn't need doing? Maybe they just cut some hoses too short? To be honest it never looked like a lengh thing, more an inadequate thickness (oooh errr ) so im surprised if a longer hose is the only change they made.

I'll call my dealer tomorrow but im not expecting them to know anything about this......

Hi,

well Mike at Bristol seemed to know all about it, the hose profile does look a little different, i looked at the GS800 they had in the show rooma and it looks like the one they put on mine, so maybe you already have the later mod?, :nenau when did you get yours?
In any case if Bath dont have it Bristol do:thumb

A letter from BMW was waiting for me when I got home. I have to give them a call to arrange for the recall work to be done. I suspect it's the top hose as I've had the rear sprockets tightened on the last recall.

Moto, mine is a fairly early bike but the hose looks well seated. I already called the dealer (CW in Dorchester) about this issue a few weeks ago and they didn't even seem aware of it yet, let alone a possible cure but i'll try them again in view of your and everywhere's comments.

It'll be interesting to see what they say:)

Well, they are stocking a new part for the top hose now but are only changing it on bikes that develope a problem, so not an official recall as far as they are concerned.

They are happy enough to change it for me next time i get in there though as ive expressed concern about it failing at an awkward time or place.

I guess thats the problem though isnt it?, mine went on a dark night on the way home from work which meant taking some time off the next morning to put the hose back on - i had to do this in daylight as the side panel has to come off- and then taking it in to the dealers for the proper fix.
All in all a good half a day gone!
Id be inclined to say "its gone" at a time and date convienient to you in the next week or two?
all the best

More than a Hose problem?

Hello to all. I've been reading through the sticky: "check your radiator top hose" as I've been having the same problem.

I'm using an F650GS Twin here in the Philippines and have logged only 1,200 Km. At 900+ km I had the engine stall issue (once), and at 1,100+ I fell victim to the "blue leg". Consistent with everyone's report, the radiator top hose slipped off so back to the dealer it went. They told me that the clamp was on very tight, that there must have been enormous pressure build up for it to come off. They kept the bike with them and I just learned today that they've isolated the problem to the thermostat. I was informed that the thermostat had failed to trigger the coolant valve to open which, caused the pressure build up.

I'm writing this as reference for those who've replaced their hoses with a longer one. Please let us know if that sorts the hose slipping.

Note: I've only run 1,200 km on mine but it is much hotter in tropical Philippines. Bike was bought September '08.

hey! hello from S.E.A too! Singapore!
i've just gotten my 800gs last month. so far clocked 750km, and did my first free servicing today at the dealer.

worried that i will face this problem when i reach your mileage. i'd be going penang, malaysia over the next couple of day so mileage wise will definitely hit 1200km by then.

hoping for the best..

Extreme pressure my arse ...

I fixed mine some 10,000 + miles ago by by removing a thin strip off the black coating (almost like teflon) back to the alloy of the stub, three or four spots of superglue, pulled the hose back over it and clamped with a jubilee clip ... ureka, no further problems.

If it was extreme pressure one of the other hoses would have popped off

:beerjug:

By the way ... welcome to the land of UKGS'er's you two

I agree. It's not pressure. My BMW dealer came up with that Gem... closely followed by... "Actually I don't really know". I said, "I know". I said the hose is too soft and the clip is not enough to hold it in place during normal operation and of course any associated vibration.

I haven't sanded the pipe that the hose attaches to but I have attached a Jubilee clip... (see my vid on YouTube in the top hose thread) and after 2000 miles it's still attached. No movement at all now. Which reminds me I should tighten up the clip again for good measure. :thumb

so at the end of the day, the main problem with the loose hose has got to do with the connection joint with isnt strong enough to hold them in place am i right?

will monitor mine for now...

Nat_han that is correct. It's a combination of problems coming together.

The hose is too soft, the clip is too weak and metal pipe that the hose attaches to is coated in paint which reduces the grip of the rubber tube on the pipe.
