► Radiator top hose failures

Take the torx screwdriver attached under the seat and just go for it. I don't remember the exact amount of torx screws to loosen, but just look carefully under the beak and along the starboard radiator shroud until you find all attachment screws. It's basically a 30 min job, depending on your speed. Just carefully jiggle the side cover off after removing all necessary screws - adjust water hose - attach new clamp - refit side cover and ditto torx screws. :beerjug:

Thank you for the tips :) It will be a Sunday morning task I think. What do the UK F800GS riders use for their coolant?

Jon,
I have attached jubilee clips, removed the hose, done a 'micky' (see earlier posts by him), and still the pressure build up is causing the damn hose to slide back. Today I was off-roading around a deforested area up here the whole afternoon, and it started again. Tomorrow morning I'll be in Donegal, and it'll happen again. I just always bring a screwdriver to pull it back and screw it down...and i'm rightly fed up with it. Until they get a recall on and fit longer hoses with better attachments, we'll be plagued. Every time I go out now I expect it. You wouldn't expect it from a 7.5k bike huh?

black hose clamps

The black Yamaha hose clamps look the way to go. Do the job...and they are not...ugly!

Mr. Pete--->

Well I have put the jubilee clip on. I used a standard jubilee clip and while it's silver it is not overtly ugly. We are adventure motorcyclists after all and not on a beauty parade.

I videoed the process and will post it on YouTube and on here as soon as I am finished editing it.

As SiJohnston point's out my work may only be a temporary fix to a much wider problem and ultimately one that only BMW can solve via a recall.

BMW already changed the hose dealer. This week BMW changed both hoses on my BMW to armored ones for free...

Jublee clip is just "hot fix", go to your dealer and ask for proper solution.

They also changed whole gas pump, because of wrong fuel level sensor (that s why your BMW goes out of fuel, although the trimpmeter shows 50 miles to go :)

You have a better dealer than mine. To be fair they are alright I suppose but the mechanic I've dealt with is a bit of a jobsworth. I pointed out the hose issue and he said 'Wait and see'. For what I wonder? Watch how my coolant makes a pretty pattern in the wind in the fast lane of the motorway? See how fast my engine takes to cook? :spitfire

They are closed today but I will talk to them tomorrow. I hope my YouTube Hot fix is useful to others. :thumb

is it just the top hose - one end?

Hi guys
Your opinions please.
I took mine in for service and asked them to change the clips (I took in 4 jubilee clips) while they had it as I could see the top one coming off.
When I picked it up they had only done one. I was annoyed as I had asked for all four to be done.
Their explanation is that it is only ever the top rear attachment that is a problem. Is this the case??
On the way home the next day ran out of fuel overtaking at 70 with the fuel indicator reading 40 miles to go … fortunately no major mishap, busy road, lorry squeaked past with a car overtaking it, A34 no hard shoulder.
So took it back in today. They seem not to be aware of others having this problem yet I have read about it for weeks on here. BTW I've had no problem with the fuel gauge til they serviced it on Tuesday … done 6000 miles.
Your thoughts appreciated.
Catherine.

...both problems are well known to BMW, if your dealer is not helping you, try to be more "angry" and mabye call BMW directly. They should change everything for free, it s a new bike and you have guarantee to production bugs...

hoses and fuel indicators problems already solved by BMW (they change parts for new and better ones), but i am afraid about "oil leak" problem... My dealer changed sealing, but for the same type as there was before... Means i ll be there again in 10000 miles ? :(

service bulletin numbers

Is there a technical or service bulletin number that can be used to reference the the improved armored hoses or fuel gauge repairs?

Thanks,
Jim

...the truth is that my info is just from my local BMW dealer... i have not seen any "hot fix" list :)

I've been seeing reports/posts of oem replacement hoses/parts for this issue. Does anyone have the number of the replacement part is actually being offered? Thanks

A guy in Spain responded to my YouTube video and suggested I strip the paint off the water pump end of the tube that the pipe attaches too. He said this is what his dealer did. Personally I don't see that stripping the paint off the bike to create a more adherent surface is a legitimate fix. I look forward to the OEM pipe fix if indeed this solves the problem.

When I took my bike in the dealer replaced the jubilee clip with one of the original types and didn't give me my jubilee clip back. As I was about to leave for Morocco, I bought another jubilee clip and sure enough, parked up in Marrakech, I noticed the hose was about to come off so I fitted the clip as tightly as I could.

However it's not a permanent solution, the hose gradually works loose again and 2000 miles later I am halfway through another fix attempt.

Odd one this. I keep checking mine but there is no sign of any leak (4000+ miles).
I'm assuming there are many others like me suffering no problems?

What is the common factor if we all started with the same parts?

High miles? Off-roading? :nenau

BMW may be using the fact that not all bikes are affected to avoid an embarrasing recall...:rob

Only ~ 2500 miles on mine but no signs yet. Had all the other things done on recall so far - sprocket nuts, caliper bolts, steering head bearing adjustment, EWS replacement (done whilst it was in for sprocket checking) - just waiting for the next thing now.

8600 miles and mine has just done it!
not to worry, i saw the situation exactly as described at the beginning of the thread, many thanks btw, and recognized it straight away having lost just a little coolant!
quick fix for now and into BMW tommorrow morning.

Yeah ... as previous, doesn't seem to happen until you've got 4,000+ miles on the clock

So keep an eye on it Deano64

17,500 miles on mine now and no recurrence since my fix :thumb
