► Recalls and software updates

As a matter of interest do you know if your bike was one of those on the recall list for a new ring antenna? Mine was changed last week at the 6000 mile service but I hadn't had a prior recall notice. I'd had no problems with it. They seem to be just changing them on an ad hoc basis when the bike happens to be with the dealer.

Elvie,

I was told there was no recall on the 800 but as the units are exactly the same as the 1200 units, I find this odd, even unlikely.

I rang the dealer ref the key antenna and they confirmed that the part would be changed when they next saw me. When i queeried not receiving a recall notice they said it wasn't urgent enough to warrant that.

They also mentioned something outstanding about the front brakes that required checking but again, not considered urgent.

Conrado,

On the 800, the connector is underneath the rectangular plastic box that is fixed to the rear of the ring as you sit on the bike. It is a fiddle to remove the connecting wire and the BMW assistance guy had a hooked tool to help. On the 800 and I guess on the 650 too, the ring antenna is rotated 180 degrees compared to the 1200 as is the ignition/steering lock (provides more lock on the bars than the 1200)

Found it !

Thanks for the info.

Comment on interference and question...

Here in the USA there have been several incidents in the paper of several new model year cars not starting in a very specific location downtown where my mom lives. Car won't start, gets towed to dealership ... car functions beautifully. There is MUCH suspision that it is electrical interference... so I might recommend that if the problem happens to any of us again that we wheel the bike off 10 meters and try again :rob

Now my question ... (sorry no prior experience with BMWs fitted with hi-tech electronics) What is EWS? Is the antenna ring system part of all bikes or only those with the optional upgraded alarm system?

Thanks,
Jim

It's the antenna ring thing. Or more accurately, what the display shows. And it's the standard immobiliser on the 1200, and I'll guess F800 as well.

EWS ?

Here in the USA there is an option #603 for $395 that is called the "Anti-Theft Alarm". I'm not sure what is included as a standard feature.

My dealer waived me off on the anti-theft package saying it was not reliable, so I took that advise... not sure how this stacks up against UK offerings....

Jim,
The ring antenna is standard fit, not an option. The alarm is the option. I did not want one as around here, alarms are going off all the time and no-one pays any attention. I don't know if the alarm is also tied into the immobiliser in any way but if so that's another reason I'd not want it.

alarm and such

Thanks Chris!

I was not sure if the antenna ring was part of the standard keying system or part of the alarm system.

When I finally go round to pick up my bike here in the states I will ask about the EWS/ring recall!

Hi
Got the recall letter today for the ring antenna on my F800gs,seems my bike is from a small batch of bikes which need this changed.
Never had a problem, but change I will on next wednesday.

If anyone noticed a red 650 going riderless up and down the Welsh M4 Thurs evening + Fri, that'd be mine after the 3 dreaded letters appeared.
All very efficiently sorted by BM assist + Bristol Motorrad.
.
Apparently the EWS is subject to a recall. Bristol have been so busy that they have been scheduling them in with next service.

Breakdown driver told me that Bristol & BVM Stroud have been refusing to take non-customer breakdowns cos they've been overloaded since the demise of Rydale in Cardiff.

The joys of electronics, eh? On the upside Bristol report zero problems with the replacement - so far. Hope it stays that way.

I Just took my 800 in to SBW in Hertford for a repair to the radiator top hose that several other folks have reported as coming loose, mine started leaking after a long run (well 3 motorway hours). & i noticed on the schedule that they'll be changing the EWS & something on the front brakes also at the same time. Seems consistant with some other posts...

the brake thingy is checking the Torque on the brake callipers bolts is correct
had my ones done a few months ago

not been told anything about EWS

BMW Admit Quality Issues in MCN

This weeks MCN has BMW acknowledging the "ignition" fault and saying they will be proactively contacting owners from September rather than fixing the issue at the next service.

Sounds like a recall - I assume this is the EWS fault :nenau

Shout up anyone who gets first contact.

Funnily enough I am sitting at home waiting for the BMW Assistance people due to an EWS error.

My ring antennae was swapped a couple of weeks ago when I had the chain and sprockets replaced under warranty! It was ok before that :augie

Argh! So its a marginal kind of assistance from BMW... if you have the EWS error they can start the bike at the roadside, long enough for you to ride to your dealer. Apparently you can stop the engine on the kill switch, as long as you don't remove the key.

Not much good to me at rush hour when my dealer is the other side of the M25 and closes at 6pm.

Looks like another morning off work tomorrow. :thedummy
