► Recalls and software updates

How olds my bike ?

My bike's not from the first batch, but the second lot that were delivered. As for whinging, I have had a brand new Triumph and never had a recall. Maybe I'll just wait for the new off road tiger to come along and p/ex this one hehehehe

Mines had the rear sprocket recall and now this one !

You can search on here - but only 2 are known of to date, being the front brake caliper working loose and a fuel pressure sensor fault.
Other issues around the stalling, loose brake discs, positioning of the abs sensor (and many others) have to date been dealt with a "service items" and not been the subject of an actual recall. Which would of course look bad on BMW.

Thanks for that BM donator. To clarify ..... are you saying that the other issues you mention are attended to when the bike goes in for a scheduled service? Do they all come in under warranty / ie no charge?

You surely don't expect BMW to reinburse you for your time and petrol do you?
That would be a first under any warranty!

at the end of the day they should not be coming out of the factory like this, were is quality control ? its all right for other bm owners to call folk wingers if there not the ones if there not having the problems.

i use to work for another brand of motorcycle ,turst me when i say bmw is top for warrantly, and some of the jobs i did on other bikes were shocking :eek:i must have changed 1000 rear brake on one model and ecu.many bike cut out and there made the chap recover his bike to the workshop.and as for 3hours try 9mnths wait for ecu.
its not good that thing go wrong but when it does at least at bmw dealers there have a brew machine

F650GS - New Software from BMW

Hi All

Got a call my my BMW dealer today to let me know that BMW have supplied a new piece of software for the 650. I'm taking it in today (Sat) to have it installed. Does anyone know what it's about? Is it just a general upgrade?

Cheers

Jason

EDIT: Just been reading a lot about the stalling issue and wondering if it's to resolve it... That said, I have only ever had it stall on me once in the past 7 months. I'll post back after the software update has been done and I've got some more info from the dealer.

Just got back from the dealers complete with upgrade. Apparently the update wasn't to fix any specific issues, but it did feel like it was pulling more smoothly from low revs in high gears on the way home.

Although this may well be psychological :D

Hiya

I got mine ('08 F650GS Twin) in June as well. Might be worthwhile asking your dealer if they've got any updates from BMW.

My dealer told me it wasn't serious or anything, it was just "an update" and if I hadn't been able to drop the bike in today, it could've waited until the next service.

What do you know? I got a letter in the post today for two recalls - the sprocket securing bolts and the front brake disc screws. I'll ask about the software update at the same time.

Hmm... Nothing was said to me about the two recalls :nenau

I think I'll be giving my dealer a call :D

Did the recall notice have any numbers or references that I can throw at my dealer?

I can't see any reference numbers on the letter, sorry.
It does say I should contact them "as a matter of urgency" so it would be worth giving your dealer a call.

EWS breakdown

Out on Sunday and turned off outside ballintoy and went to restart - EWS fault shows and bike won't start. After a few mins it went out and bike started. Stopped again at Bushmills...properly dead this time. BMW assist recovered it and it's now at the dealer's. I had a new ring put into it in June last year as a precautionary measure before traveling. My 12k service was done 3 weeks ago and sunday was the first trip out after, so maybe the software update has caused a glitch? just beware if you're heading off for the summer as this doesn't seem like a completely healed fault. :(

Can you give us the number of the ring that failed? I had been really hoping that this fault had been at last put to bed for good.

mmm concerning. Mine is in for it's 12K on Saturday. 5000 mile trip at the end of the month. could be problematic if this puppy dies in the middle of a Ukranian forest :augie

if i'm talking to them later today i'll see if they can shed any more light on it. they seemed as confused as i was given that it already had the replacement ring put in. it's not a software glitch as there was no update. either way it's just a pain in the rump...

I'm sure I've seen on a 1200 thread that carrying a spare ring is considered essential by some for trips into the wild.
Perhaps ask a dealer if they'll do a "sale" of the part on the basis of returning it if not required or refunding under warranty if it is?

The ring antenna is supposed to be a fixed issue. Earlier F650/800GS that were shipped using an earlier version were recalled for replacement.

And ALL 1200GS/GSA models whether in warranty or not have also been recalled.

Tim
