TKC's at speed?

What aboout on the road at speed - how do they get on circa 90 (tops obviously) & wet roads?

I am on full road tyres and am thinking spare set of wheels for off road with TKCs. Although a lot of people seem to like the TKC on road as well as off, my limited experience makes me think get the best tyre for each surface.

Hi

Now I appreciate that there is a whole load on here about tyres - having spent circa 40 mins looking through it all this morning I still carnt see a clear view of what people would recommend for:-
GS650 twin 80% on road 20% off road. Motorway sometimes at circa 80 > 90.
Desire to use the bike offroad (tracks) - Alps in the summer next year. Living in the Lake District, on occasions would want to take it off road small amount.

My research to date has me looking at:-
- Metzeller Tourance - seemingly voted 3rd in a test (which was covered on here)
- Trelleborg E-08 (suggested to be 80/20) however I havent seen anyone who has used them much to get a sense of how good they are for what I'm looking for - anyone got any experience?
- Dunlop TR91 - however, what I've heard they are predominantly road - dry tracks ok but muddy not so good.

I've had Battlewings on & like many people on here have found them to follow the white lines too much & not good off road.

So, sorry for adding yet another thread on tyres, however I have tried (honest) hope you can assist.

From original tomb stone death wings i went to Metzeller Tourance which gave me the great confidence on road very sure footed and off road ok great i dont think they are great self cleaning qualities and better off road Dry

now I have Heidenhau K60 scouts only done under 400 dry miles on road I need to get some off road (investigating lanes etc at the moment) and some wet riding need to work on the wearing down those little black (tetas de cobarades) needles but the up to 20mph Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i dont think about now, they look

was going to get TKC's but the k60 scouts offer better wear, Lord vador from the dark side (12GSA) had 12K to on his rear it may be more same size rear as well he liked them so much he bought a new pair of the same (but the newer design has a continual centre bit pictures in the tyre section )

Had them on mine for about the same 80/20 on/off road.

Great tyres but developed a very scarey weave and consequant tank slapper at...ahem....... the speeds you have mentioned.

I know this has been discussed in this section previously.

Puma - i'm weighing up Tourances vs Anakees at the moment. What did you make of the Tourances on wet road? I'm 99% road, looking to ride through the winter.

superb wet and dry and a little off road dry is fine (not so keen at salisbury plains in the greasy wet chalk)

But would deff go back to them, early days for my K60's still testing them, tetas de cobarades still remain but I'm on to them

Puma recognising the fact that you have still to wear the tyre in, (reduce the size of your nipples - I'm reading too much into the interpretation!), on the motorway how do they feel vs the tourance?

Had TKC's fitted 2 weeks now on gs8, generally very happy. 1000 miles. 60% of miles on tarmac, 2mm of tread gone on back already. whoops.

Re speed: I have had slight handlebar wobble beginning at 80mph. This was with 1.8 and 1.9 bar front and back. Me 80kg. Reading in forums this is quite common.

Put pressures up to 2.0 and 2.5 today as will be carrying pillion soon but also as an attempt to reduce wear and see what happened to the wobble, wound up to 90mph with nothing noticed.

Played for while offroad at these pressures and certainly the bike squirmed around front and back a little more than at the lower pressures.

I honestly try not to and fortunately don't have to ride in the rain as the roads here just ain't made for it. I don't think i'll ever fully trust any tyre on the wet, so glad to be over cautious cornering with these tyres when the surface even looks a bit damp, but I am just a novice compared to these other tossers.

Good luck with your search for the right tyre for you. I'll be buying another back tkc for sure.

At the moment at about 90 and a tad there is some weave enough to make you roll off the throttle (I was going to play with my ohlin to see if it makes a difference if i shift my weight back its smoother lord vader on his 12GSA does not get this but different heavier bike)

On the other hand Im not at 90 and a tad for long.


But the short answer has got to be Tourance wins the more Road Biased contest because that is what it is.

To make it simple and IMHO for 80% road and 20% Off road, the Michelin Anakee 2 are just superb.

Good grip on road, very good grip on wet road, and they just do more than fine off road ! A very very good compromise
Good mileage too !

I've used them for ages, even on my old Funduro 600 and now on my 800GS they never disappointed me at any time.

Try Avon Gripsters if they fit a 650? Cheaper to buy and last well.

I have used them on a Tenere and they 80/20 rated according to maker. Did some green laneing in West Sussex on damp chalky lanes and no major issues for me but two other bikes had offs with TKC's! They could not believe I did not get an off with the gripsters.

Metzler Karoo's ??

Just about to buy some enduro tyres for my offroading foray's, had a set of Karoos on my KTM 950SE they seemed ok done Wales for a muddy weekend all ok, Just wondered if anyone had tried them on a 800GS

I usually fit a TKC80 on the rear and a MT21 on the front which for me work really well but not really into the MT21 on wet roads, and hate the TKC80 front in the mud i think they are simply useless

any suggesgions would be great

You don't think the Karoo will be good on a wet road.....?
Forget about wet road riding when being trail tyres..... it's a compromise, there is now 'good' all-rounder.
Karoo is a decent trail tyre, as is the MT21, but poor of tarred roads.
The TKC is a road tyre with trail capability, but poor on the trails compared with the above two skins.
I see the Heidenau K60 is getting popular with folk now........

Cheers Timpo know where you are coming from, just looking for a trye thats got a bit more wet road grip than the MT21 but with the same off road graces K60 does look good but they dont look like they can handle a load of mud without getting clogged

I suppose Ill get the Karoos and see for myself worst way I can change the front to a MT21 again and know my wet road limitations lol
