► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

Have a 'day out', and go to Micheldever (just down the A34). I bought my front (Trail Attack) from them last year, and they were about £10 cheaper than anyone, about £87 fitted from memory. They do offer a 'ride in/ride out' service (costs a little more), however, I like to take the wheel out myself, so that I can have a good poke about whilst there.

I've found the receipt, it was £78.28 inc vat and balance. Last October.

Thanks all, TA's it is then.

I have used Bike treads in Swindon for years. Always had a good service, and they focus on tyres, chains etc, so know their onions. Think a call will be going in to them tomorrow - I'll let you know what they quote.

Joker
I'd had the bike into NOG for a service and thought I'd give them a chance to quote for the tyres, stupidly thinking that the 20% off might have brought their price down to a 'realistic level' :blast

Yes, I've had quotes, mostly for the comedy value. Only people with too much money or no time use NOG for tyres. :thumb2

And funnily I commuted to Potterspury on my R1200GS. :thumb2 Small world.

Three quotes: £212, £198, £199.

Am going with Steve Lyneham on the outskirts of Swindon at £198. Go with the little guy I say!

Had a quote from my local BMw dealer for a set of Anakee's £260ish If I recall correct, kind of drifted off when £200 n.....:blagblah fitted was mentioned :jes

I had to repeat my request a bit slower..... a price for 'just' the tyres please....£198 :jes

Got a set online delivered to my door in 2 days for £166 and I'll fit em meself in my own time! which will give me opertunity to clean and check the wheels after this winters 'salt-a-thon' :)

PS they were from Pnues online http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/

I had a similar experience, was quoted "ONE MILLION" :JB for a set of TKCs, when I actually wanted "a list of approved tyres by BMW" as the manual states one should get from BMW. :blast :D

Yes, €133 per set of Heidenaus delivered to the door from the same place. One evenings work and they're on the bike. :thumb2

Now for some of useless information...
In Germany, you fail their version of MOT (TUV) + you can get pulled by the local constabulary + void your insurance, if you fit tyres that are not 'approved' by the manufacturer

We don' know how lucky we are here in good old blighty :augie

This is very true, however, this is typically sorted by a phone call to the tyre manufacturer or bike/car manufacturer who can confirm (or deny) that the tyres are suitable for the vehicle - but if they're not suitable, there will be forms filled out, and they do like their forms. :thumb2

I'm pleased to see the online prices are only a tenner or so below fitting. I'm quite happy swapping my treads, but don't have anything to balance them with, so figured it was worth the extra.

What're you guys using for home balancing?

Home swapping can be a PITA, I only do it because we've got more than one bike and I want to have the option to buy used tyres and/or different type tyres for the bikes. As for balancing, it's the easy part.
I use the abba Tyre Change Package
http://www.abbastands.co.uk/product_details.asp?id=38
along with a few extra eBay tyre levers and rim protectors.
If you only have one bike and can yank the wheels off, it's much easier to take them to a company and have them do the hard work.

Yep for a few extra quids (depending on the fitters. A mate gets his done with a nod and a wink for a fiver cash) you can get em fitted so no hassle to yourself.

I like to do them myself jus for the satisfaction and larf of rubber wrestling in the shed! :D

Also means I get practiced at replacing/repairing an innertube by the road side as opposed to going home on the back of a truck :blast
Tubless are loads easier to sort out on the roadside! Be good if they did a tubeless rim for the 800GS similar to the 1200GS spoked wheel!

Regards balancing.... what Joker said re. abbastands, although usually its the wheel thats out of balance Ive found, tyres usually ok (ish), did have one that was way out once.... manufacturers put the valve 'dot' in the wrong place refitted tyre 180deg out and it was fine then.

I usually fit em at home and if they vibe alot I pop in to a friendly bike shop and use their balancing machine coz I is to tight/lazy to buy/concoct a balancing thingy :)

I suspect the 650GS wheel is the equivalent cast one for the 800GS. Shame there's only one disk, maybe one from another bike in the F800 range would work?

As for the Abba stand, at £100 I can get ten sets of tyres swapped for that, so maybe I'll leave it!

That price include a valve which you don't need, they'll knock about £1.30 off at the till.

V8legend, thank's for the head'up on Micheldever ,I'll be making a trip down to them :thumb,
Churchills came in at just under £200 for the Trail Attacks.

Yes, you need to change quite a lot of tyres before it "pays off" to do it yourself. I'd like to know the company that changes a tyre for £5. The going rate was £12.50 per loose tyre, last time I checked. And at that rate, it's about 5 sets changed. With 2, or more, bikes in the garage it'll be a few years for the "pay off". Depending what one gets and how much riding is being done.

One thing I did for my previous bike was to buy a set of part-worn softer compound tyres, they were £90 delivered (vs. £240 brand new), and fitted them myself. Big saving right there. :thumb2

But, like I said, it's not for everyone, especially if you can get the wheels off yourself and you're good pals with a garage.

Steve Lynham, little industrial estate on the Highworth side of Swindon (next to the crematorium actually!)

I paid £198 for the Conti's fitted, where folk seem to have been quoted £18-odd.

If you buy the tyres from a dealer they usually offer free fitting, even ride-in-ride-out, but if you have your own tyres, they tend to charge commercial rates for the fitting.

So, is that £5/wheel applicable if I come there with my two wheels, and some part-worns?

Another :thumb2 for Conti Trail Attacks. Just about to replace mine after 6,000 miles, front is half worn, back about 2mm left. I ride all weathers and they have been spot on for tarmac and dry dirt tracks but useless in mud as one would expect. Will replace with the same again.
