I have a 08 800, and I had a few stalls when it was brand new, but it's never happened after the 600 mile service, I don't know if BMW fixed something or it just stopped happening.

Thanks all for your replies, I think I will mention it at the 600 m service and hope it doesnt happen again, the turning right thing is a bit wierd, i cant spend my life just turning left! I am realy enjoying the bike (stall apart) having ridden boxers for so long its a refreshing change, love the character and burble of the engine- (when its running) Dave.

My 10 plate 650 does it when the engine is fully warm, then stop for a short period (engine off for say 3 or 4 minutes).

It will then sometimes stall at the first junction just as pulling away.

(bike is well run in now)

I had some similar problems with my new 08 650....if I recall rightly, BMW downloaded some software and it's been fine ever since...touchwood.....:D

Stalling at low revs

Bikes been in service for 4 days now, 10k miles, but they are still trying to find the problem with idle speed. Bike has only cut out once with throttle wound on. Most of the time the problem starts shortly after start up when the throttle is closed or bike is just sat idling. Revs counter that normally sits steadly just over 1k rises and falls around 1.5k and then just cuts. Very annoying at roundabouts and when you need to pull away quickly and you just roll into the middle frantically pushing the start button.
Has anyone found the solution to this stalling at low revs yet? Surely manually maintaining revs above 2k all the time is not the solution I've read most of the pages on this subject with no real answers to my problem. My climate is 25c+, no rain and the bike 2010 gs8.
Hoping BMW Rex Mallorca can sort this soon as I'm getting bored sat on the sofa.
Cheers. fez

Just a quick update (gloat?)

I was exploring its flexibility today, and managed to chug it along quite happily at 1000rpm in 3rd gear, pulled cleanly and evenly from there too.

However, again while arsing around, noticed that if you pull the clutch while you're in any gear at any roadspeed, the revs hold at 2k, only dropping to 1400rpm to idle at less than 5mph or so...

It'd be interesting to try and gauge the similarities or otherwise of a bike equipped with one of the fuel modules...

3 twists

Thankfully bike back from service. They still can't find issue with stalling but they have ordered under warranty the idle speed controller thingy for me. Exact same issue as I left the showroom. Stopped bike. Ignition off, ignition on, 3 twists of the throttle and start. Problems gone. Anyone know what this resets? It seems to have solved the problem for now. Any other secret reset manoeuvres worth knowing of?

TKC's fitted, very happy. 15 Touratech parts all fitted by me, bling, loving the adjustable levers and the pinging of stones bouncing off the alu radiator guard.
Plenty tracks here in Mallorca.

I have an accelerator module on my 800GS (very happy with it!) and thought I'd see what happened in third gear. It doesn't feel very natural but I let it the revs drop in third and it wouldn't go to 1,000 it just idled along at about 1,200. When I opened the throttle it just pulled away, but it doesn't really feel like this would be a good way to ride one of these things. Still I'm amazed that it will even do it.

I couldn't remember what the second part of your test was, but I did pull in the clutch and I think it just drops to idle.

Idle regulator replaced under warranty this week to try to solve this stalling problem with my bike. Took 2 hrs to replace, panels, battery and airbox had to come out. All good so far. Suns just come out so will give it another 4 hour test run today.

800GS's Still stalling?

Three and a half years ago I wrote quite a lot about my own experience. Three days after buying it new it went back to the dealers for repairs (2500€) but I never saw it again. It was back to a new trusty 1200GS and no more troubles. Now i feel it is a bit haevy for me but I dare not change it for any of the 800 range; might wait for the scooter!

Sadly this newly fitted part has not solved the problem. Hmmm what next?

"It was back to a new trusty 1200GS and no more troubles. " Yes, it cost me an extra 4000€ but that was over three (trouble free) years ago.

Perhaps your dealer has a real-time data logger they can attach to your bike and you or them can ride around until the bike stalls then review the captured data and see if anything sticks out?

I like it thanks Jimbob. Had to pack the bike away for 2 months sadly to go back to work, but after the last wash and polish it had real problems going on with stalling. Is there anyone from BMW listening to these problems with any answers?

Help needed.

Hi,

So sadly the bikes back with the garage this week trying to resolve this ongoing problem. Please does anyone suffer the same stalling problem with their GS800?
Certainly intermittent but once its there its very annoying and somewhat dangerous. After start up it hovers above its normal idle speed and after about 5 seconds sounds confused and then cuts. Its also happened a handful of times whilst riding. The only thing that seems to solve it sometimes is a magic 3 twists of the throttle and restart. So far just the idle regulator has been swapped out, diagnostics say everything is fine as it always has. I'm looking for anyone thats suffered similar problems and advise of what to do next. The bikes still under warranty. How far will BMW go to make this better? What can I demand? Is this just something I just have to put up with? Love the bike, this is its only downfall.
Thanks in advance. cf :thumb2

I experienced a similar problem but not as often as you, I have had it on a 2008 800GS and now a 2010
I fitted the Accelerator module to mine http://www.sol2.be/Performance/ENG/BMW/index_BMW.html around 35 euro works just fine never stalls now no noticeable difference in fuel consumption it makes the engine think its cold.

Thanks Colint, Not sure why I should be fitting any sort of device to make the bike idle at a normal speed. Appreciate you have had these problems and it worked for you. Surely the bike should be able to idle at start up without any problems?

Hi Mike, Kinda hoping BMW garage would look at this sort of thing. Would this normally cause this type of problem?
