05 1200 abs pump how much

It looks like I am going to have to buy a new abs pump for my 1200,
Ive tried replacing with a used unit that was thought to be good but its not having it.

I can fit it myself no problem but bmw won't guarantee the new pump unless they fit it.

So has anybody had a new one fitted at the bmw dealers and what was the cost.

I expect a goodwill claim from bmw to be non exsistant at my bikes age and mileage (80k)

Sorry to hear that this has happened, at 90k miles and 7+ years I suppose its not too bad a service life. I don't know how much they are but I think I heard a figure of around £1500 fitted. I also have heard of people taking them apart and finding out the problem lay with the pump motor brushes sticking, might be worth while taking a look? The other alternative would be removing the ABS unit and just having standard hydraulic braking? I am sure people on here have done this to save the expense of fitting another pump. I have a 2005 and dread this problem occurring. Good luck with that hope it works out for you

It must surely be a time limit? You could knock up 6k miles in a 2 week tour changing the brake fluid every couple of months does not sound right to me! I'm not saying he's not right about changing the fluid regularly but every 6k miles ... I'm out!

The pump motor brushes sticking are on the Gen 2 pumps from august 08 on,
I still have the servos working its the abs thats not,
I have thought about removing the abs and its pretty easy to do but I like to brake hard and get the abs working on occassion ,plus with the servos its very easy to lock the front at speed and it is safer with abs.

Change the brake fluid yrself its easy and there are guides on here and adventure rider to help you with it.

Well that's what i thought!
Did tell him,bike had a full service @19thou/mls,bike was parked for 2yrs
and is now on 25thou/mls.
Brake's work perfectly.

Can you do a complete servo/ABS ectomy I wonder? My GSA was one of the first without servo and I specced it without ABS. The brakes are very powerful and I have never felt I needed ABS. On ABS equipped bikes I've ridden, I think it comes in far too early.

Anyway, removing the whole damned lot could be a good way to save money

The servo abs is on the controller network and the central vehicle electronics expect to see it. Disconnecting the pump could throw up all kinds of CAN error codes. I think a servo-ectomy on a 1200 requires a reprogram of the system which would require a dealers help. Steptoe may have the answer as a man "in the know."

These pop up all the time on eBay or motor works sell 2 nd hand units.I think the units from motor works come with a limited warranty.I would also try BMW as this should last the life of the bike'got to be worth a try?

Removing the abs and servos is a piece of piss just have a flashing light on dash to tape over but,

I like having the ABS,I also like the super strong 1 finger braking of the servos,
80mph > 0mph with abs and servos is something I dont have the skill to do with out abs so I have to have it.

I'd have tried a few repairs before trying a S/hand unit, maybe wrong but I thing the ECU knows exactly what's attached and may not allow the replacement unit to work unless set up by your friendly local BMW dealer

Thanks for the link,very helpful,apparently there is someware in the states that do the same for £500 so it starting to look a lot more positive,

I have tried everything I could find on the net and more,I changed the pump because of the abs not working and I got offered a 2nd hand pump at a bargin price of a fellow forum member (Patzx12) who is a real gentleman and I have dealt with before and he is to be trusted no question,

in the past I have had the servos stop working and it has always come back or a fiddle with brakes switches have cured it,but this was differnt with a error code showing the motor in the pump was faulty,
when I changed the pump the problem is still there so I swapped the controller of the original onto the 2nd hand unit,still the same except the fault code shows the front abs sensor not working,now this seems to make sense to me as to why the servos are still working and not the abs,I removed the sensor from the forkleg and rode the bike and its still the same,I will get a new sensor on Tuesday and try it out and see if its that.

My V5 says nothing about ABS or servo. My insurance wanted to know of any modifications. Better brakes were no cost - seen as a safety improvement. Removing a servo or ABS would be hard to argue as an improvement.

i managed to replace my abs pump with one from a fellow forum member.

does anyone know if the fixing on the right hand side of the pump (as yr sat on the bike) should be tight or should it be a "floating" fixing to allow movement if you get my meaning?.

Hmm, when I bought mine, ABS was an £800 option and despite them trying to sell me it as a safety feature, I resisted and have ridden and stopped safely for 90,000 miles
