After a long wait my new 1200 arrived about a month ago and I am very pleased with it apart from the new shape side stand.
Instead of going straight out forward like the 05 models it bends back on its self in the middle and this to my mind makes it very easy to drop it off the stand, just a little forward movement is all that is required. (nearly dropped it a couple of times when mounting the bike)
It also leans over a lot more than my 1150 did and you really have to watch where you park it, as if the road camber is quite steep as it normally is here in NZ you can have problems.
The new shape center stand with the straight bar across is I believe easier to lift up than the one with the hooped center bar.
Any comments or suggestions to fix the problem would be appreciated.
Even bought the tourotech bigger footpad in anticipation of the bike arriving and this doesnt fit as they have also changed the shape of the footpad.

Jim, the '06 model is much straighter than the '05 model. My '05 hit the deck twice before I learned to leave it parked in gear.

I know this is not what you might want to do to a new bike, but a little trick on the old style 1200gs side stand, was to grind/file a little of the metal off the stop where the side stand meets the frame stop when in the down position. This allows the stand to lean slightly further forward which stops the side stand from popping up when on a slight slope. I don`t know if you could do this on the newer version, as I haven't looked at it as yet.

A word of caution though, only remove metal from the side stand, NOT the frame. Also if you choose to do this, take a little at a time and check. The bike may lean over a little more than before, but not that much as long as you don't go shaving off loads. :thumb

Thanks for the hints guys, I have taken to leaving the bike in gear all the time now when parked and have just had another look at it. It would be unwise to file anything off as the bike does lean over much futher than the 1150 did and I would need to take a bodybuilding course to be able to heave it upright.
looking at the bike side on when it is on the sidestand the angle of the bend actually goes backwards about 5 to 10 degrees from the vertical towards the rear wheel making it easy to tip over if you are not carefull.
I may try different size blocks under the footpad to see what is needed to keep the bike more upright.

Cheers

This being my first BM I was impressed that it actually is sprung forward, no more guessing if the stand is all the way forward or not :thumb

I had an 04 bike and currently have an 06.

I find the 06 bike does feel a little more likely to roll forward on the side stand than the old one but havn't yet found the need to switch off in gear as of yet. (this used to confuse the electrics on the 04 bike!)

The 04 bike sidestand was a pain in the arse to put down with wet boots and short legs! - the spring action and kink on the 06 is a distinct improvement

But what do I know, total mechanical knowledge easily transferrable to a second class stamp!

I have an o5 GS 12 and have had no probs with the stand but do think it looks a bit spindly...

However - take a look at a typical Italian stand and you'll laugh. I have an old Duke engined Bimota and the stand is a straight piece of chrome steel that holds the bike about 5 degrees off verticle and does not 'lock' in anyway.

The one time i didn't leave it in gear, the wind blew it off its stand - while I was filling it with petrol.

So - happy with my Bratworst Barnstormer!

Side stand

My former GS, an 1150 managed to roll off the side stand a few times (fortunately the engine bars prevented any damage;) With the 1200 model, now 18 months old, it DOES lean over more than the 1150 and I have always felt nervous about it - and that probably is why it has remained upright for 18 months! It may be a bette design or it may just be that I am more careful now.
