Hey all,

Had movement in back wheel at 3 and 9 oclock. Dealer has said new final drive required at a lowly £1358.00. Gave me the choice of new vented one or original at same price. I assumed new meant better than old and opted for vented one. Dealer has said he fitted it and there were ABS issues. Also that BMW would not allow any new ones to be released for fitting till all old ones were used up (doesn't really tie up with fact he has fitted it already). Also said not to worry as replacement old style one comes with 2 yrs parts and labour. Biker has done 28k miles. Had small oil leak at final drive 18 months ago and was told there was too much oil in the drive originally. Had it replaced with measured lesser recommended amount. was informed at that time that there was some play in final drive bearing but it was normal and nothing to worry about. All this was approx 6k miles ago.

My questions:
1. Should this part have failed at all and should i be demanding goodwill effort from dealer.

2. Is dealer blagging me about abs issues in order to get shot of another old stlye part lying on a shelf somewhere instead of fitting newer better part (after all I am paying for it so should i not be able to pick which one i want).

Off across germany and france in a weeks time so need to get back to him first thing monday.

Look forward to hearing from all.:flag

1. NO!

2. YES!

Dont you just love these dealers, £1350 quid :eek: for a FD change, a search on here could have saved you about a grand for a straightforward repair..... and no fairy tales :blast

bmw and there 1300 qiud bills , tell them to go swing , give schrimminger engineering a ring and get them to rebuild it for you

An 06 you say?? I had the same problem. The newer drive WILL give you ABS issues, as I had them as I bought a later drive. Mechanically they are the same, apart from the ABS ring. A BMW dealer should know this. He should never have fitted the 10 model in the first place.

There are several different iterations of drives based on when ABS units etc were changed- you would be amazed. You need to check an online microfiche to see the part numbers as it is almost impossible to distinguish an 06 model from a 10 model (pre vent of course). I cannot comment on individual dealers, but some seem better than others. I am lucky- there are 2 very good ones in my area plus an excellent independant who will ALL give you the same answer- a 10 will not fit an 06.

The answer is getting it rebuilt- I had to get a 2nd hand one as at the time repair was not that common (presumably cos BMW still replaced loads under warranty) and as time has gone on, more people are gearing up to do them as it is a captive market!!

When mine goes again - which inevitably it will, I have my old one to rebuild, plus the one I have on now. Now, who to choose..... there seems to be good recommendations for lots of people.

If its and 06, its 5 years old, if you cannot get anything from a dealer under goodwill, I would rebuild and have done with it.

Many thanks, will go ahead with 06 new one and i have already told them i want all the old parts so will be in the same boat as you with a spare to have rebuilt.. Think you may have saved me an embarrasing angry call to them in the morning. They are not the greatest dealers but the mechanic seems to know his stuff... Cheers again
