Me and one of my chums have been playing about with roll-on acceleration tests. So I thought I’d share our results.

Me: 2009 R1200GSA, 12000miles, Remus Headers, OEM silencer, Accelerator module, Top Box. Rider weight approx. 18st:eek:

My chum: 2010 R1200GSA, 1000miles, bog standard but also with Top Box. Rider weight also 18st (yes two large Tossers:mmmm).

6th gear roll-on (3 runs)

50 – 100mph = both bike exactly neck & neck all the way.
50 – 135mph = again both bike’s equal up to 100mph. But then my bike just buggers off and at 135mph (and still accelerating) I have pulled a good 300 meters lead (my chums GSA maxed out at 125mph:eek).

I know that some of you chaps will call this pointless, daft, irrelevant etc.:rob But it eased the boredom of a long Autobahn blast. And the results were quite interesting and significant.

My 2010 GSA with 1600 miles on the clock, at the time, on several long attempts, trying to keep up with my riceburner chums would pull no more than an indicated 130mph @ 7500 rpm

Me, 15 stones +GSA Ali Top Box.

Note on no occassion would the motor pull over 7500 (to tight)
Also note 2010 motor's rev limit is 8500

Best regards Stretch:)

What petrol were you using? - need 98RON in the 2010 to get max power.

Interesting but I must admit

If I wanted to go 130mph then I would not have a GSA but a K1300S - just cannot see the point in going that speed on an adventure bike.

Not a criticism but an observation:)

Its called having fun - again, just an observation :thumb2

I'm guessing the difference is really the headers, which do have an impact at high rpm. And at that speed the distance between you is not that much.

I assume the answer is hidden in the torque/speed curve.

re 09 10

ive just run in my 10 gsa after parting my 09 gsa using normal unleaded petrol my 10gsa is definately quicker, power is so smooth, cornering is more stable,in towns no more chugging just nice low down bimble, and the exhaust is so nice on the power, tyre were a little concern for me as ive always used tourances, now have conti trail attacks on take a little time to warm up,but when pushing them they are really good bit more lean angles just so inspiring, wasnt sure i done the right thing by trading me 09 for 10 best decision ive made this year thumbs up for 10gsa now only 4 weeks to the swiss alps :aidan

Agree the 10gs is definitely a lot better around town, the extra low torque that was missing on earlier models makes it far nicer to ride - mine will happily pull along on a closed throttle with no 'chugging' and stuttering - and then take off like a scolded cat :D

I think the lower final drive ratio on the 210 may have something to do with it as well ! ie quicker pick lower top speed

Rider ability will be more relevant that the small bhp differences between these bikes, there are too many variables to make this a scientific test.

I have ridden with Yonkyo and he ain't gentle with his throttle :D

Not sure about the lower top speed bit because the red line is 500rpm higher.

Ditto.......I'm off to Alps for a play @ end of month.... perhaps we can have a race down then post the findings... but don't go over 60mph....remember it's a adventure bike!!!!:augie

Oh, I don't know what the attraction is of bowling along at 130mph, sat up, listening to some music, waving at the tucked in rider on the UJM.. Can't see the point in that at all :-) IME the GS is stable enough at full whack for emptying the fuel asap.

I have never found mine that stable at 110mph fully loaded let alone 130mph - hence my comment.

Maybe I should get some lessons from you guys on high speed riding:)

Surely that's against the law isn't it?

Could be your tyres. Mine's fine with Michelin PRs.

Was just gonna add the same :thumb2

Mine was never stable when loaded and at speed on so called dual purpose tyres.

However, proper road tyres and she's as stable as a stable thing all the way up to silly speed.

Also, obviously, preload - when I had standard shocks on my '05; full rear and one click softer than standard on the front made a big difference (at all speeds).

We'll have to get together for another blast this summer mate.:thumb

Here’s how we did the test.

We both have bike to bike comms. So we rode side by side and took it in turns counting down 3,2,1,Go. Then we both just pinned our throttles to the max. It might not have scientific, but it was a good laugh.

I know that his bike only has 1k miles, but it refused to rev out in 5th & 6th gear, so having an extra 500rpm rev limit seems academic.
