Hi

A friend has just had his first service carried out by Vines, he had a bill to pay of nearly £200 !!. I always thought the 1 st service was low cost Apparantly they change the final drive oil and have to put a very special oil in that costs £32 for 250ml !! begs the question why do they sell castrol EP 80 -90 in the shop.
I have a 97 1100 and have used EP 80 - 90 without a problem, at best the special oil can only be a full synthetic and would not cost £32 for 250 ml if purchased from Halfords. Is this a BMW rip off or am I missing the point.

Regards

Mike

Its gone up, last thread on this was £28 per 250 ml. Nice little earner at £128 per litre for any liquid petro chem product. £200 for a 600mile service, obviously the bikes underpriced (yeah) and the dealers making his margin

The differences between 1st service prices is amazing. I took mine in last week. I supplied 20/50, oil the dealer couldn't, and the overall bill from dealer £33.57. Add the oil I purcased myself at £15.00. Total bill = £48.57.:thumb2
I think a fair price to pay.

I had my first service done two weeks ago -
Semi synth oil £26.96 +VAT Rear drive oil £7.51 +VAT
Total bill £57.29
And I had to pay for a loan bike!!!

Happy days :thumb2

Welcome to the 1200GS bandwagon

1st Service used to be free in the old days

Ohh........and extended warranty was cheaper too

£200 for a first (presumably 600 mile) service sounds severe. And charging for a courtesy bike sounds discourteous!

My 12k service cost £200. The first one was free.

So much for the privilege of owning a BMW....

I pick up my new GSA from Vines at the weekend; and have just asked them for the confirmed price of a 600 miler. Oh and yes they charge £20 for the loan bike whatever it is......have told me the bike needs to be in for the best part of a day - to which I said it was news to me having had two new Jap bikes from new and they were in and out in little over an hour or so and that included fairing removal!!

Will let you know what they say!

Mine would have cost £99 but I negotiated a free first service when I bought the bike.

Astle BMW at Laceby near Grimsby only charge for the oil and filter, everthing else is free including the loan bike ----------- top folks:clap :thumb2

1st Service

Yep, just had my 1200GSA 1st Service at Vines and cost GBP 212.00 !!!!!

That included £25.00 for the loan bike plus oil and gear box oil. Cheeky buggers also add the cost of a litre of oil for topping up which they then delete of you don't want it.

When I dropped the bike in I suggested waiting for it to be done, but was advised it was a least a 4 hour job, so took the loan bike rode the 50 miles back home and had been in no more than an hour when Vines call to say the bike is ready!!!

Will be shopping around for future servicing !! and will insist on it being done while I wait.

IIRC part of the 600 miler is to check the heads torque, which needs a cold engine. So, if it's dropped off the night before then it would take a lot less time in the morning before you could pick it up.

212 is a piss take. I paid less than that for a full service at vines. That said I'd do my own oil and brakes.

Its traditional that you pay for consumables only for the first service. That's still the case with jap dealers.

Well Vines have confirmed £20 for the loan bike; cannot service on Saturdays as not enough time, and £50 flat labour charge plus consumables. Still after a definative charge which they seem to be avoiding - will let ya know.

Yep confirmed today by Vines, £50 labour, £63 for consumables and £20 for the loan bike.

The bike has to be there for a few hours as they need to let engine cool sufficiently to be able to torque the engine bolts properly. Still do not see as an all day job - but if you are paying for the loan bike gonna use it and pick up the bike later in the day!!

Regards the oils....assume I can source myself to the BMW spec...and then they can do the job - might save a bit!

First service cost

I PAID £160 ,AND TO BE HONEST I THOUGHT THAT EXPENSIVE, THAT INCLUDED USE OF A COURTESY BIKE, ALTHOUGH LOOKING AT SOME OF THE PRICES CHARGED TO OTHERS HERE ON THE FORUM IT COULD OF BEEN A LOT WORSE!!! REGARDS JOHN:beerjug:
