Hi All, my 08 1200GS is now over 100,000 miles. I service it myself to the usual BMW service schedules that someone kindly posted up on here. Are there any specific service items that are required with the higher mileage that are not on the 6000/12000 mile service schedules. For example, should the camchain be replaced at a specific mileage? The bike is running fine, however I do seem to have an occasional vibration through the footpegs. Final drive bearing and shaft appear to be fine with the bike in neutral. Bike is on the origional clutch, has had union joints on the shaft drive replaced once, both lower stick coils replaced, 1 lambda sensor replaced and the final drive bearing done a few times. I don't think I'll ever sell my 1200 :). Any advice appreciated. Cheers David.

Good work! I have put 60K on mine and it feels no worse (as good doesn't seem appropriate) than when I rode it out of the stealer with 0 miles on it. They definitely like being used a lot rather than stored for sunny Sundays. If/when it gets to 100K I will treat it (and me) to a valet performed by a couple of bikini clad BMW trained wenches

Why fix what aint broke
Yeah, true, clutch still works OK, burns less than1 litre of oil every 6000 miles so I guess piston / rings are o.k.

Alternator belt still works so fine. I just didn't want any engine damage if something let go that i should have replaced 🤔

The service items shouldn't change. I'm at 123,000 and it gets serviced the same as always by Mikeyboy.

I had new rings last year as she was blowing a bit of smoke occasionally on hot start up which cured it the problem. Whilst the heads were off, Mike fitted new exhaust and inlet valves just because it seemed like you should whilst in there and the bores were perfect and I'm hoping for 200k with nothing much else.

I have the drive rebuilt every now and then to be on the safe side as I go to remote places but bar that, standard servicing rules but with all fluids done every 6k.

Are steering head, front suspension wishbone and swinging arm bearings in the service schedule? Seems like these would be worth at least a check and lubricate.

Good point. I greased the swingarm bearings when the shaft drive union joints were replaced (replaced by Mikeyboy). I'll plan to looking all of the above when I get a chance. Im considering putting a new clutch in as well. Also as sgt Bilco says I should look at getting my final drive bearings replaced at some stage, I guess Mikeyboy is the one for this job?

Forgot to mention I've had a replacement 2nd hand alternator and new front wheel bearings as well.

Assuming not already done, at that kind of mileage I would get both shock absorbers overhauled/serviced by a suspension specialist ( I use MCT in Stowmarket and I believe Firefox Racing also do them). Cheap when compared to replacement at £109+Vat each and they come back like new in about a week.

Easy enough to remove the shock absorber units yourself and send via courier service. It would transform the ride and handling and prevent risk of a sudden damper rod seal failure as they replace all seals and fluids.

Whilst apart you can check and lubricate or replace the suspension/steering bearings as necessary.
