1100/1150 offroad

About half the lanes in Wales.

I don't doubt for a moment that there are a lot of places that its physically impossible to get an 11xx up.. or down.

But it never ceases to amaze me - the skills of some of the chaps on this forum and what they're prepared to risk.

In fact it was the consensus, back in 94 that any kind of 'off road' was a definite no-no for these bikes.. on another forum I'm a member of the same idea prevails.. these bikes just can't hack it... don't even bother. buy a 250/400 jap. enduro.

And then.. along comes some chap. thumbs his nose at the nay-sayers. and does it.

Margus... aka Tsiklonaut. shows in this video what the 1100 is capable of.... all you need add to a standard bike are the frame protectors/hard parts. knobbly tyres and away you go.

I'm an ex GS-owner so I know exactly what these bikes are capable of and I've also pushed many of them when tail-ending offroad groups. You clearly haven't.

If it's relatively flat and relatively dry they are fine. Otherwise the weight will always get you. Don't kid yourselves.

I never go off road... it doesn't interest me. But one thing I do know.. is that its foolish to make prouncements like this based on your own riding skills.. because there will always be someone who will prove you wrong.

'Wet' in the context of offroad means mud, water on rocks, water on slopes. You don't know this because you've never been offroad yet you choose to make pronouncements on what is or isn't a good bike for the job.

Put your money where your big mouth is and try it and then you might have some credibility. In the meantime, I'll be ignoring you.

what a nonsensical reply.. I didn't make any pronouncements at all.. I simply commented on yours. I have owned a variety of bikes over 30yrs.. but choose not to name them all on here.

I don't speak on personal experience... I speak after reading/ watching/ listening to people who do have that experience and care to share it. And i admire them for that enormously.

Yup the 1100GS will ride off road

But add deep mud , ruts, and the additional weight.

if your serious , go for a 350 up 400 cc bike ...they are more designed for the gnarly stuff , ye get on heavy duty off road treks.


Ive been green laning with a mate with a DRZ400 , on my 1100.

I much prefer my XT350 for the dirt now.
Besides why nack up a good 1100, 1150 ,just to drop it in the mud.?

Thats why i ride the 350 in the dirt and keep the 1100 for touring.

I like "green laning" on the GS because it's a challenge.

If I wanted it to be easy I'd ride easy lanes on a trials bike but personally I find it really satisfying when you do the difficult bits.

I'm not claiming to be good but it's pretty satisfying to get close to staying with the people on enduro bikes when you're on a tractor

In an ideal world I'd have another bike on which I'd go off-road. As it is, my 1150 will have to do. I plan to have a bimble on Salisbury Plain with some friends when the ground firms up a bit which will be my first real attempt at off road riding.

I don't have room in my garage for a third bike (the other is a Kawasaki Versys). I use both of my bikes for commuting so if I break something on the GS off-road I know I can still get to work on the Kawasaki.

My personal view is the GS was designed to take a few knocks and I do know it's not an ideal off road bike but for the kind of green laning I want to do it will suffice.

Each to his own. If you have a light off-road bike, use it. If you don't, use whatever you have and make the best of it.
