1100 Disks loose, very loose.

Am I to understand there should be some play in the discs? Mine are solid. Bolts torqued properly as well.

Hows she cuttin Daithi
Had exactly the same problem with my '03 Adv. Front RHS disk rattleing like mad. New bolts, washers and bobbins were the answer. Replaced both sets. Total cost about €100 from Motorworks in the UK.

mine have started rattling more ever since i went out for a thrash last sunday.
I was trying to keep up with my mate on his 954 fireblade.

I could just do it if he kept on the back wheel....and i mean 'just' ..but only in a straight line. Round the bends he leaves me for dead.

poor little bike started misting oil from all its gaskets it got so hot.

Brakes

Sounds like too much braking at corners, use the gear box and wind the power on and beat the bastard, failing that tell him it's stuck in third.

Got movement too...

Hi all,

After some more advice, had a rattle coming from the front of my 1100 and thought it was the tax disk holder (it was loose and rattling around) but changed that and it's my disks - both off 'em.

Been reading this thread and getting a bit confused with which way people's disks are moving - I've got movement if I stand at the front of the bike facing it head on and pull/push my disks, probably about 2/3mm or so, checked out a friends 1100 and his are fixed, no movement. Is this the same type of thing that Vern has given the solution for? I replaced my disks about 3months ago so they should be fine and I thought that this type of movement would be against the disk bolts shoulder thing rather than the wheel?

Cheers
Bill

Hi Bill,
The solution Vern suggested is to fix sideways (axial) movement, the cause
of which is the enlarged diameter of the bolt holes in the disk eating into the
aluminium of the wheel which supports the disk. It sounds like this is not the
problem you have which is either worn bolts or worn holes in your disk.
Filing the aluminium "boss ?" which supports the disk will only help if there is
sideways movement.

Hope this helps.

Had a look

Hi,

Cheers Daithi, thanks for that I was just getting confused about which way the play was going compared to yours, think I thought about it a bit to much and got confused:confused:

I've had a look and as you say my mounts seem pretty flat and as I changed my disks only a few thousand miles ago I didn't think they could have worn and I've still got my old disks and compared the hole sizes and both the same. I took a bolt and bobbin (?) out and noticed that it had a 'flat' on each side giving an oval shape, put back in with the flat's pointing up and down (towards the centre and rim and that stopped the movement. I guess they will move back to the same position after a while so the solution seems to be new bolts, bobbins + washers all round.

Thanks again for the info and prompt reply.

I agree that this is a 'bloody good site'

i might take my bobbins out and put a thin smear of clear silicone on them to stop the rattle.

Mechanically they're never going to fail.

Well, mine's just failed it's MOT due to too much disk movement. Amazingly, Williams BMW were cheaper than Motorworks for the bobbins, washers and bolts, although as is my luck, they didn't have 10 of each in stock.

Having just spent £1650 sourcing and having installed by Scrimingers a low mileage replacement engine and swinging arm, amongst other bits and bobs, i'm now having to spend another £60 to sort the disks. Life eh ! :tears

That's it,just file the lugs flat and put it all back together, jobs a good 'un:thumb

Right, found this now.

VERN, please excuse my ignorance here mate but if I have to file the 'lug' flat, will that not move the mount point of the disc inwards? If so, will the disc not foul the calliper..:nenau
