1100 Electrical Fault

Bike won't start. '96 1100, 109,000 miles (56k mine), lives outside, never let me down before. Spins over, plenty of petrol, doesn't fire, fizzing noise (which I can't quite pinpoint) from the area in the picture accompanied by the tachometer needle jumping up. So far:- parked in the sun, removed tank & alternator belt cover, WD'd likely areas, wiggled likely wires, checked fuses, put on charge (cranked it quite a bit).

Anyone come across anything similar or got any ideas please?

That's Motronic's brain socket. Those noises seem to be a bad contact(?) Take the socket off from Motronic, should be additionally fixed with 1 screw if i remember correcly, then clean the contacts (i.e. scratch the corrosion off slightly with a screwdriver or sumthing similar) and put it back. To put back and take off the socket few times also helps so the contacts can "clean" the corrosion off each other and "seat in" a bit better on old bikes.
Also inspect the cables near to the socket and those that connect with the socket's contacts, if they're loose or any bad contact caused from them. You need to remove the surrounding tape for inspecting them. Retape them with a new electrically isolating tape when yer done and fully certan there's no problem there.


After that (if the noises are then gone) do the Motronic reset coz if it still works it probably needs resetting after bad contact "confusion". Take the fuses F6 and F5 off for 30sec or more, put back on, turn ignition then on and roll the throttle fully on and off 2 times. Ignition off. Reset done.

Try starting then.

Any improvement?

(PS: Motronic carries quite lot of voltage on some parts they say, i hope the bad contact hasn't damaged it, OR it's actually a noise from inside the (fecked) Motronic itself :confused:. But i guess it's unlikely. )

Keep us posted Mick...it does sound like a bad contact or 'tracking' due to moisture or corrosion.

Margus's suggested fix proved ineffective, so did more listening aided by 21 year old son (my ears :rob ) who pinpointed noise as being behind starter motor shroud. Cleaned connector on the thin wire, bingo! At least I learned how to take off the motronic unit and how to reset it :thumb .

Your ears? You should be proud he's having multiple times better ears than you pinpointing out that faulty spot :D :D :D

You could have told me this was a classic Hall Sensor fault sympton. Bike's been on the blink after behaving on Tuesday. Multiple searches on this site :bow revealed this today. Missed The Hungry Hedgehog Rally 'cause the bike was u/s :(. Got the sensor stripped out this afternoon, will test wiring with multimeter later as recommended in many posts before putting hand in pocket :D .

Before you condemn the sensors just check the wiring. The 1100 was made with the wrong grade of wiring to the sensors, this made them susceptible to failure, it may just be the wiring that's failed and not the sensors. The 1150 had the right grade of wiring apparently. so these symptoms on the 1150 point directly to the sensor.
