1100 gearbox compatibilty

Hiya guys its seems my gearbox has the dreaded input shaft bearing problem. Theres a few 1100 boxes on ebay off k1100,s and r1100s.would any of these suit my gs?.failing that theres a 96 m94.i know buying a used box is it or miss but the thought of whacking out £600 note's on a recon straight after xmas scares the life out of me.a rebuild is planned for the future.cheers

Edit - assuming it's an 1100GS, the compatible gearboxes seem to be R1100R, GS, RT, RS and the 850GS and R
 
A wee note on that would be :- Basically as long as its a Cable operated Oilhead gearbox

The re released R850R "classics" had the 1150 type box "If" I remember correctly 2003 on ??? I think

You correct and that was 6 speed box ...
 
Rs and rt will fit gs I think, go for m97 , why not fix bearing ?

1)lack of time 2)I.m not quite sure whether its a little bit out of my league. Dont get me wrong im fairly mechanically minded but I.m under the impression you gotta know what your doing with these gearboxes,shiming and all that.
 
Why don't you get Steve Scriminger to rebuild your box? Just had my spare M97 done by him for about £340 for external refinish and all new bearings. FWIW I replaced the original M94 with this refurbished one. I would avoid buying an M94 I..e a pre-1997 box if I were you. Oh, and don't get an M93 'cos they have different internal gearing and you'll have to change the FD too. It's all on Largiader's site, which I have found to be accurate.

Beat me to it. Steve put an M97 cluster in my M94 box for similar money. I'd close the thread now and just do it.
 
£340.now thats pretty good..I have a rebuild planned for summer when I use my other bike.in the meantime I have a hefty car service bill to pay so I.m gona have to take a chance on a second hand one.i.m also looking for a quick fix so not to keep me off the road too long.luv me riding you see.even this time of the year.heers

He did my 1100 at around 80,000 (can't remember exactly) and it's as good as ever at 131,000.:thumby:

Sounds good buddy.i.ve gone off the second hand box idea.so mines going off to steve in the next couple of weeks.
 
Another vote for Steve Scriminger.
He rebuilt my gearbox last year for about £350 - a much better use of your money than an eBay box of unknown quality or a Motorworks used box (bear in mind that Motorworks boxes aren't reconditioned, just 'inspected').

While your bike is in half, consider doing the clutch if it's worn and have a good look at the crankshaft output seal.
 
Cheers matt.i.ll check the crankshaft seal,didnt think of that.i might have the right t/body rebuilt aswell.i dont mind justifying spending money on a 80k miler bike because I got rid of one 1100 yrs ago which I.ve always regreted,this one going nowhere.clutch is fairly new.how can motoworks justify £600 for a"inspected" box?

Market forces, I guess.

They'll 'inspect' a box, reject any obviously duff ones and take a chance on the rest. If they last longer than the 12 month warranty, then they're quids in. If they fail then they give you another 'inspected' box.

While it's not desperately hard to split the bike, it's a lot of dismantling and faffing around. After all that work, when I did it I figured it was a much better bet to give it to a respected specialist than take a chance on a second hand box. I also put a clutch in at the same time and changed the paralever bearings (and then got rid of the bike 1000 miles later - what an idiot :rolleyes: ).

It's also a good time to check the wiring loom and earth points around the battery box - impossible to do without the battery box out.
