mates 1100 suddenly lost all drive in all gears except 5th.Never been into a BMW box before, before I open this can of worms does anyone have experience of these boxes?do you need any BMW specific special tools?Mate hasnt worked in 4 months so buying a replacement box not an option.I have a good 1150 standard box if anyone fancies a swap for an1100 box [reckon that would save a lot of grief!!] any help appreciated ta

Steptoe's your man for this.
Hopefully he'll spot this and chip in (although if he's going to the hogroast it might be after the weekend).
In the meantime, there's a lot of gearbox stripdown info on here and adv if you have a dig.

Why the gearbox? Driveshaft or clutch or final drive are all options

Better to strip the driveleine down and confirm before going further

hello Jaythro, amazingly he got to my place [45 miles] using only 5th gear, obviously the clutch is now toast, horrendous bearing noise and no drive in 1st-4th,good news is I kept an old clutch I changed preventatively for a mate before going to Morroco. Will get it apart tomorrow cheers

I would say find a box

He shoulda pulled up and parked it

Bottom Line Expensive repair or Replacement Box

Contact Ogni off this site he may have a box with a skipping gear you may be able to make one out of 2???

Good Luck

cheers Jaythro, will contact the man, really dont want to open the box but its got to be done, the irony is ive got a perfectly good 1150 box sat in my lockup

1100 gearbox

Yes, i got a spare gearbox with 2nd and 3rd gear that need attention.

No bad noises from the bearings and the casing is in good condition.

no shrapnel in the oil, input and output slines and bearings seem fine, thinking detente/selector problem?Anyone had these symptoms input much appreciated!Going to open it tonight once ive borrowed a camera to take some pics:(

well gobsmacked to find the idler shaft had sheared clean in half, obviously a manufacturing flaw but doubt BMW will see it that way.99 bike 50k meticuously cared for, everything else perfect not a chipped tooth or a broken dog, virtually no detectable wear. Not impressed at all, done loads of jap boxes and never seen the likes of that.Anyone ever heard of that one?

agreed Dave, will bung some on soon, still in shock and covered in gearbox oil...

Bummer.
But at least the problem is obvious - sorry - small consolation I know

cheers Matt, shoddy QC strikes again,be interesting to see what MR BMW has to say......
