I have always had that surging/stuttering effect from my 1100's and I have tried everything including John the Greeks chip. I balanced the injectors, did the valve clearances and had them checked on exhaust gas analyzers but never really got rid of that bloody annoying on/off surging in the lower rev range. Very annoying in traffic and slow speed maneuvers. So I removed the beige relay, the one found near the fuses.Totally transformed the bike, feels very smooth at all revs and particularly at lower speeds. Pulls top gear from 1200 rpm and the surging has disappeared, this bike's a keeper.

You will probably see your mpg suffer a bit. Mine did. Probably woth the trade off though if you do a lot of town riding.

Does your bike have a working O2 sensor?

Ineresting :mmmm, I renamed my 1100 'Sergio' , same problem as your bike Pathfinder. What does the beige relay do ? and should I be doing a relay removal to stop Sergio surging ?

No cat on my bike !

Just FYI, the coding plugs are shaped like relays but a just wires that just interconnect various pins.

The Beige plug tells the Motronic that your bike is an R1100GS and to ignore the O2 sensor.

No Plug (which is actually Plug "zero") tells the Motronic that you're an R1100RT (or RS) and that it should ignore the O2 sensor.

A Pink plug is for R1100GS, using the O2 sensor.

Maybe the No Plug fueling and spark tables better match your exhaust.

I have the original exhaust. I took it out today for about an 1/2 hour and checked the plugs. They are sooty, they weren't before.

I did the reset, removed earth lead from battery for several minutes, replaced the ccp and three turns of throttle. It seems to be running well now with no surging.

I was under the impression that it was just the later 1150GS ecu that 'learned', and so would benefit from a reset. I didnt bother resetting mine after installing John's chip, would be interested to know if I was mistaken and should have.

surely it reset itself while you were fitting the chip, unless of course you left it plugged in?!
