:jibber Want to swap my 650 GS for an 1100 or 1150 GS. What are the pros and cons of the two?

Cheers! :beerjug:

1100, 5 speeds, ugly square headlight, quarried from granite, 1150 6 speeds odd eyes lights, not much difference apart from that.

Bought an 1100 about a month ago

there is one very bad thing about it. I just cant stop riding it, and have just about given up using the 1200.

its whatever front end floats ya boat best, as both bikes are pretty much the same, even fuel economy as the 6th gear is more an overdrive on the 1150, not much in power, ect ect

clutch is cable on 1100, hydraulic on 1150, pros and cons for both

1100's are regarded as a connoisseurs choice :thumb

up to you now,

1100, the finish is better, the lights are better,

they are better:augie

Don't be put of by 5 gears. Fuel eco is the same and they pull better when overtaking on the motorway.

I always say to people that if they're going to need to do a lot of motorway miles.. then the extra gear (economy) is very useful. However if like me you avoid motorways as much as possible.. then the 1100 is fine. These bikes natural home is (imho) fast A roads.. B roads and lanes. and the 5 gear box is absolutely ideal for that.. some 1150 owners who traded in their 1100 have said they miss the old gear box due to its 'useability'.

I don't mind the square headlight. I can't see it when I'm riding. However it does benefit from adding extra lights which i have done to improve the 'dip'

The 1150 is ideal and ready made for a HID upgrade.

btw - a fair few 1100 owners have got tired of the front headlamp and replaced it with the headlamp/beak from the 1150. one way to get the best of all worlds. But not for me.. I revel in the bikes wackiness as is.

really it just comes down to personal choice... what you want the bike for and what you can find when you seriously begin looking.

Later 1150's have servo brakes ....whch a lot of folks really don't like. I only rode one once for a few days and their are ferocious. It's was like having an on/off switch on the brakes - no feel because the servo slammed in with the lightest of touches on the lever. It's just something else to go wrong and so unnecessary that BMW have dropped them now.... I think (someone will correct me if I am wrong).
Late 1100's seem pretty bomb proof. There were some gearbox issues with some of the earlier ones but overall they seem to be lasting thes test of time very well. The price difference between a late 1100 and and early 1150 would make up my mind: 1150's seems more expensive but why...? If you don't like the single headlamp of the 1100 there are aftermarket dual headlamps out there.

If you go for an 1100, get a gearbox hardpart.....known weak spot that could turn out to be a very expensive omission if you take it offroad:eek::(

Have you not considered the 1150 Adventure?

You would however need to be of formiddable physical stature to be able to control this most excellent example of the breed .... or just a fat crunt like me :D

1100 = bombproof
1150 = bulletproof
1200 = light slap around the chops proof

The 1100 was the best bike I ever had, Great fun, reliable.

The 1150 I have ridden and its also a great bike

So simply buy the best one you find based on mileage and condition. Age is not that important. IMHO

The six speed box is only useful if your doing lots of motorway.

Just swapped my 1100 for an 1150 and apart from having a newer bike I'm not 100% convinced I've done the right thing:(
1100 is better on the back roads because of the gear ratio's, the 1150 better on a long run because of the 6th gear....guess where I do most of my riding:blast

Still got my wifes 1100 to use when she's not about though!!

1100GS

Take a look at mine it's in the GS for sale ad,I thought it would have sold by now a great bike for not alot of money.:nenau

I was faced with the same dilemma recently and decided to keep the 1100, theres nothing wrong with the 1150s but I think the old bikes have more character.
