1100 sidecar build

Contemplating a 1100 sidecar rig build since I have a toddler I'd like to get into biking, has anyone done one on the 1100/850 or 1150?

I have 21" front wheel mod right now which I recon is a bit too narrow for a good grip steering (no leaning with the sidecar). I'm thinking going back to the stock 19" or even a 17" wide wheel (maybe I can fit some older non-paralever BMW moto rear wheel as a front wheel) so I can fit a car tire in the front, but would it lower the front too much with 1100/1150GS+sidecar setup(?)

Any experience on this highly appreciated!

Wowza, that looks like a massive ad-hoc build (me hats is off to Fanum & Co!). Will try to keep mine simpler and hopefully more secure with those critical mountings.

I've no experience with BM's and sidecars but congratulations on becoming a dad :beerjug:

Cheers Andres, it's not an easy feat, but I reckon keeping him out of house and on a motorbike saves lots of things in the house to be broken :D

Ha ha.................my daughter went to hospital in a sidecar (in her mum's tummy) and came home two days later in a sidecar. It's all she knew until she was eight when I got my first car but then she was also old enough to go on the back of my bikes............. :D

Go for it, it'll be fun :)

I probably just had my last ride to work on the GS as a solo bike.



Since the bits are coming together. We'll see how things pan out with the rig... If it's a capable rig that works for our style of going, it'll be more to come.

Good luck with the build....like Andres, my wife who was pregnant with our eldest son was taken to the labour ward by sidecar, and we brought our son home in the same outfit. :thumb

Rear bottom mount and sidecar swing arm articulation point (you can actually choose between two spots depending how you like it).

Upper mount. All mounts are adjustable just like the bottom mounts. All good quality parts.

Mounted on from the rear. It takes 3 lateral main points from below, in front, center-stand mounting points and from a special rear subframe+gearbox+footrest connecting arm part TripTeq supplies. The latter works as a "hard-part" as well normally known on the R850/1100GS bikes.

Some final adjustments, very easy to do with the instructions coming with this sidecar rig.

Automotive wheel adapter kit comes with a very neat brake disk adapter since to my surprise there was also the ABS-ring connector points as well, so I could continue using the ABS on the bike (ABS has saved my skin on many occasions).

The weel adapter goes on with the original bolts so very easy to change the wheel or tyre in the future with 3-bolt connector for the automotive wheel (no need to mess with brake caliper anymore like with the original wheel).

IMO the 3-bolts solution is brilliant for ease of maintenance, just like on the legendary G/S models, don't know why they went for 4-bolts and have-to-remove brake caliper solution on the later models, it's just more work and not much benefit.
 
I built this...

Runs an rt17" front with mitas 130/80/17 rear tyre and an adv rear shock so I've shifted the steering geometry about half a degree steeper. Steers fine by no means heavy even with the big heavy chair, child and boot full with bags on the rack. Does shake the bars a little around 15mph but stops about 17mph.

I fitted a 3 point harness to strap in sprog and she wore a ski helmet inside the chair. Now wears an mx helmet ready to go on the back of the solo bike

Down side being fuel economy.... 150miles out of a 24l tank.

Also fitted a 850rt fd but I have the sport box which is too high.
