1100 Speedo Change - How?

Hi,
I want to change my current speedo on my 1100 which is in Kph to a UK Mph one. Can anyone tell me how I go about this please?

its just the speedo itself i believe (though im ready to stand corrected)

give motorworks a bell and they should be able to sort you out a secondhand unit cheap.

But be careful, your messing around with the odometer reading if you do it this way which can be a bit of an issue when you come to sell it.

Another way would be to get a convertor which is screwed in line with the speedo cable, it reduces the ratio of the speedo cable by 1.6 times. I.e itll convert the existing speedo to read in mph. Again though, problem is that itll have say 50000 kilometers then 50000 miles.... its a grey ish area

I've got a new replacement speedo with "0" miles showing and will document the change by taking photos of the old one before swapping them over. I'll keep the old one with the bikes documents so in the event that I sell the bike I can prove the mileage.

What I would like to know is how I go about removing the old speedo and swapping in the new one?

have a look at the exploded diagram of the instruments.. may give you an idea. I believe all the fixings are at the rear/underneath.

ahhh right, well you need to just get the instrument panel off. Im used to the 1150 so itll be slightly different but close enough.

If you get the screen off the might be another panel covering the instrument cluster, get that off too, then from memory there was a couple of flanged nuts holding the speedo in place, undo them and disconnect the speedo cable. Also pull out the little rubber grommets with the backlight bulbs in. Swap the speedo over and reverse the process. Theres no dodgy bits

You might consider getting the odometer adjusted to read the correct mileage there are several companies that offer this service, might be a bit easier when you come to sell the bike eventually is all

I had this situation with mine when got it. can't help with a 'how to do it', as it was pushing nine years ago. But I can say that it only took about half an hour. As to the mileage problem, I've just kept the old 'foreign Devils' speedo. Another way might be to take a photo of your old speedo reading, along with one of your 'new' one (if it aint 0 ),then stick it in an envelope and post it to yourself, but don't open it until you come to sell. That way the date stamp on the letter will back up your claim for the date you changed them.

And yes, I know, you could take photos of any speedo, you've just got to be honest with yourself about this...

Have managed to change the speedo now so thanks to those that contributed.

Those of you who may be thinking of doing it in the future, here's how.

Remove screen.

Remove headlight.

Undo 2 x bolts at the rear of the instrument cluster (10mm) and 1 x Phillips screw inside the headlight unit (at the top).

Pull the instrument cluster up and back to expose the dials and wiring.

Undo the speedo cable.

Undo the two speedo retaining bolts (10mm) and pull out the speedo.

Remove the two speedo lights and the rubber grommet from around the trip knob.

Its worth testing the speedo lights at this stage as I found I had a blown bulb so it was replaced after a trip to Halfords.

To fit the new speedo, just reverse the above procedure.
