ok so yesterday i thought that i would try out the new 800 gs , im sure you all know what its limits and its pluses are but after my test ride many thanks bmw peterborough i have decided to keep what i`ve got , my 11, . the 800 has a great free reving lump that i was really very impressed with , i could compare it to a softer ktm 950 , tho the ktm pulls a lot faster , but again its nowhere near the 800 for sipping petrol , after giving back the keys and discussing options , i hopped back on the 11 and rode back home with a new va va voom for my bike , it really is very good at doing back roads and fast a`s , my still one and only complaint is the god awful wind protecton , i really like the look of the oe screen , so much infact that i have remove the vario and junked it to the back of the shed , instead put back on the standard , but after riding the 8 with its small screen , im in the process of looking either cutting down a standard or replacing with a smaller aftermarket one , any tossers here done the same and what was your thoughts , the 8 screen put the wind right onto my chest with my head in clean air and was much much quiter that the 11`s ,

for me.. all I need is the bottom part of the Vario. took it off two summers ago on a whim.. ir's stayed off. I'm 6'7 in my boots with a seat thats 3" higher than stock.

Hi Buzzy, I know exactly what you mean. I have an 1100GS, and was given an 800 as a service loaner. I thought the engine was fantastic, but I didn't gel with the 800 somehow, and I appreciated anew my own bike afterwards.

I hated the noise from the stock 1100GS screen, and cut it down to cockpit size using a bandsaw. It's a lot quieter, but essentially makes the GS a naked. However, it protects the underside of the clocks from the worst of the weather, and also keeps the front fairly tidy. Running with no screen at all makes the already odd-looking GS resemble a hideous post-apocalyptic rat bike.

It was fine up to about 60, but long, fast cruises were a bit tiring from the windblast. In the end I fitted Tobinators (which require you to buy an 1150 screen) and they are much better than the original screen - there's still some wind noise, but enough air comes underneath the screen to stop a partial vacuum forming & collapsing behind the screen, which caused the buffeting thump that the old screen suffered terribly from. The Tobinators also allow a huge range of screen adjustment (up/down, forward/back, and tilt angle) so you can tune the airflow to your height much better.

My suggestion would be to simply ride without the stock screen for a couple of weeks, and try to ignore how wrong the bike looks without it. If you like the quiet, and don't mind a bit of an arm-stretching above 60 mph, then either buy or make a cockpit screen. If you really need a screen, I would recommend Tobinators + 1150 screen.

Buffeting came to a full stop when I fitted the Vario. Interestingly it didn't return when I removed the top part. It feels now in many ways like I'm riding a naked bike.... which is what I like. However there is no buffeting at all. a good result. (for me)

I think the 1150 screen looks damn odd on the 1100. worse than that, it looks plain wrong. cut out, as it is for a double headlamp

The screen issue is a well worn path of discussion. Consensus is either a low screen for the wind in face folk, an MRA for relatively normal size folk or a big fck off for us tall bstrds who like no breeze. I have an Aeroflow and it is the business. I have a dodgy neck shoulders from too much high speed/distance sports stuff. I used to love a blast on the R/R's but knew about it afterwards.

Standard 11 and 1150 screen was no use for me either way but it's always a tip to tilt the screen as far back as you dare to avoid the wind "going round" it before it hits you (ie closer to you= better, shallow angle= better). :thumb2

ok so i really have two options either cut the screen down ( thats a poss ) or tilt it farward which i have not tried as yet , i thought that it would be a better bet to have it bolt upright , i may even try the fileing down one side of the locating bolts that ive read about on here somewhere , i will give the easy option a go first and if that has no effect will get out the hacksaw , my screen is cracked so its always been on my mind to locate a new one if this drastic option is no use to me at least ive tried , i will also try the no screen to see if its the screen thats the problem , many thanks for all your responces ta :)

Standard screen, have it as angles back to you as you can and increase it in degrees until it gets real noisy. many folk have their screen upright (looks good) but the GS screen is mounted a long way away and the wind will be just meeting iteslf as it gets to your head:D

Best way to test ANY screen is to go for a ride, sit at 60-70mph in a comfy position, and then move your clutch had up past your chin towards the top of your head. You will feel the air go from still to a raggady assed mess. Above the raggedy is smooth MOVING air. You are aiming to either be in the still air or in the smooth moving air. The raggedy assed stuff is what gives you neck ache and possible tinnitus after a long ride (wear ear plugs!).

If you are OK with head in the breeze stuff go for the smooth moving air, if not you have to get under the turbulence. You will notice that on newer big touring bikes there is a layer of moving air on the INSIDE of the screen. This is as the screen gets bigger there is a big chance of a vortex being formed which will help to loosen any earwax you may have:D

That is why RT/LT/Pans are suspended screens with air both sides and they work the best. i am 6'6" and the best screen I have ever tried was a very oversized RT screen but at its shallowest setting.:thumb2

Buzzy I think I have an old 1100 screen that I put some "naca " ducts into to give the airflow on both sides of the screen, It helped me.

I don't have the 1100 anymore so if you want the screen to experiment with then, PM me an address an I'll send it on.

Aw ra best
