Can't think of a better word than initialising/priming - you know when you turn on the ignition, put up the side stand, then the fuel pump primes and RID fuel guage comes on.

So what reasons are for that not happening? I can only think of maybe the kill switch and side stand.

Not a jot out of it this morning - my #1 culprit is that the side stand switch is knackered which I think is a pain in the arse anyway.

If the side stand switch is the problem, is there any reason why I shouldn't short it out? I presume the switch is "on" when the side stand is up so hopefully I can snip the wire and solder the two wires together (if there are two). I don't have my Haynes manual handy to check out the wiring.

I just shorted the connector under the left side panel using a bit of speaker wire with the insulation stripped off.

Have a look at the bundle of wires going into the back of the ignition switch, thats what did it for my wifes bike.

set off with it down?

mine was disconnected as soon as i found it cut the engine when on tickover and it was down.
It still wont run if im in gear and set off, so thats fine by me.

Agree, there are 3 switches on 1100 (maybe 1150 too, I don't know for sure): neutral, side stand and clutch.

I canceled my side stand switch by putting a wire in the connection under the seat, to "fool" the bike that it was always up. I only fooled myself, as I once forgot ti down, until the first RH corner, at ~ 30 km/h.

The bike threw the rear end into air, but I did not fall. Only got so scared that had to smoke to chill down.

So don't!

Have a look at this

http://www.ibmwr.org/r-tech/oilheads/Sidestand_Down_Generic/index.shtml

Add a relay into the equation so if you put the bike in gear with the sidestand down, it kills the engine

If it's in neutral, the bike should still start with the sidestand down. The sidestand switch is unlikely to be your problem.

Do the 1100s have a reverse gear then:confused:
:D

Nope - my 1100GS will not start with the sidestand down, and it kills the engine whenever I put it down and the bike is in neutral

Yup I concur - just re-soldered all the wires after two snapped on mine.

If you move the bars and you get power no power , it's probably a wire gone at the lock or at the connector under the tank.

A quick search in this forum should reveal the instructions to effect a repair.

Neutral switch would be the first check for me then.

Sorry, I'll rephrase that - to the best of my knowledge, all 1100GS will not start with the side stand down.

And today, mine would not start with the sidestand up, nor would the fuel pump engage or RID display fuel level.

Basically the bike is acting as it would it the sidestand was still down, that's why I'm thinking the switch is knackered.

I just cut off the wires to the switch , works ok.

That was my knowledge of how the 1100 works, the 1150 though runs with the stand down.

My 1100 had the switch bypassed from when I got it, no drama if anyone left the stand down either :augie

Yep - my (standard) 1100 is dead with the sidestand down, clutch or not.
