hi fellas,
fro teh past 6 wesk my GS 1150 has been running slighty rough , no real loss of power or perfromance , but between 1500 and 2500 revs there is a discernable vibration and a throtty sound . i have had the sparks plugs and th efilter changed, also had the valve clearanced checked and adjusted ,
today i got it back from BMW having had a diagnostic ran (£150) and they have adjusted the throttle bodies
guess what no change ,

any ideas

check the lid on the airbox is it closed properly ???

try running it with th seat off and rev it does the lid wobble??

my 11oo did this a while back

filter cover looks secure ,
Did you run the engine? and watch the cover as suggested??

Mine was secure till you reved it then I found my growling noise

I could actually watch it vibrating open and shut!

The trick was to bend the tangs a little more for more pressure

These old girls have big pistons moving around inside their motors,so expecting it to be smooth under 2500RPM may be asking a bit much.
What's it like from 3K upwards?.The usual problem area for vibration is 5K+.
Is it definetly an engine speed problem or road speed?.
Worn tyres can also generate vibration.
You could also make your own manometer and check the TB balance yourself.
Also look at rocker end-float/valve clearances as well as TB balance as that helps smoothness.

The airbox lid can look closed where the two screws are at the front, but where the hinges are can sometimes still not be closed properly, DOUBLE CHECK the back of the lid is closed too.

is it with all gears? if only in 4th, its normal (i mean if its the same vibration..). i realized mine only after riding my bike for some time.

I suppose the diagnostic covered checking the output of the coil. If so read no further.

Possibly on the wrong track altogether, but could it be similar to a problem I had
It started with slight rough running. midrange from memory. No missing under load. It was just not running as sweet as usual, and it sounded more "throaty" if that makes any sense. Because it was a gradual process in my case, several weeks, I hadn't really noticed how bad things had become in the end. Just assumed as it was due for a service soon it just needed tuning up etc. Then noticed using more fuel, and a noticable misfire under load. Having to open throttle wider open than usual to overtake, (more fuel :blast) It took some time though for me to suspect the coil, put it down to some duff fuel or needing a service.
Even put some fuel cleaner through in case it was a blocked injector.
When coil was replaced it was an instant transformation......hope it helps and that you sort it soon.:beerjug:

You could be throwing him a red herring - are you talking about the well known failure of the twin spark coil caps ?

The orignal posters bike is a 2001, that should be a single spark which doesn't have a coil cap.

Not sure what was replaced as it was done under warranty.
I was told it was the coil. :nenau

Do you feel orig post problem could be to do with the coil / cooils though ?
It sounded like symptoms I had.

When did this all start? was it after doing something in particular??

I thought th airbox was the bizas thats what was wrong with mine

I'd fire a set of sparkplugs into it to test, and if no change I'd check the sparkplug leads for any sign of breaking down and the coil for cracks and trackingwith all the other things that you have already had done

That would be the next logical step!
