I'm fretting slightly about the rear caliper. I've searched on here, and I supose that I'm just being phobic:augie

I cleaned the pistons and all the caliper parts and put in new pads.

Red rubber grease on the O/D of piston and inside the rubber gaitors, sliding pins are not corroded.
Copper grease on retaining pin, back of pads, and on other sliding surfaces.

Pistons return easily when pressed with my thumbs, yet the rear disc was very hot after a 5 mile motorway run. No discoloration on the disc though. I removed the caliper and checked that pistons still retract with thumb pressure and they do:confused:

I've ordered a new retaining pin, just in case the grooves are holding the pads onto the disc.

Could it just be the new pads bedding in? The discs are showing signs of wear after 47000 miles. Am I just being phobic? Or bored as I'm off sick with a bad back.......... after being on the floor poncing about with front and rear brake service:blast

the rubber bellows over the pins push the caliper so one pad is always rubbing the disc. this is probably why yours is hot.

Seems hotter than before I changed the pads, but there again I suppose the bellows are being compressed more. Which leads me to wonder if I put too much red grease in the bellows, sure I didn't. Did I? I DUNNO, DID YOU?:confused:

Just been out to the bike, squeezed the brakes & released, the caliper still moves about, so must be OK.

i reckon if both pistons and caliper move freely, there can't be much to worry about.

Are the brake hoses new?

You could have some dirt obstructing the oil in the hose, not allowing the pistons to return back.

It happened to my brother's 3 yo bike.
