I took my ADV out for it's first trip today .... try to start it last night and it was flat (even though on the BMW opitmate thing). Took the charger socket out and then put it back in again(and wiggle it about, just in case)
On the BMW optimate over night - light went from red to green (so ok)
Managed to start it this morning, though it was a very weak battery ... ran down put in some petrol ... ABS still blinking after filling up, so wasn't looking good !!

30 km later, stop for coffee. When I came to restart it was as flat as a pancake!! However we were on a big hill, so bump starting it work

If left on the optimate over night, it always suggest that everything is ok ... but it's not.

Can i assume as the battery is original that after 8.5 years its has given up the ghost?
Or is there something else I need to do?? Regulators, fan belts:augie ????

TBH , I'm going to have to buy a new battery here ... Switzerland - which means I'm going to lie down and prepare myself to be financially rogered !!

Is getting to the battery easy - or does the whole bike have to come apart?
I'm guessing it will be under the tank - so does that have to come off or can it just pivot forwards?
Thanks

It is under the tank so make sure it is almost on empty before changing the battery. The tank can be pivoted from the back; to make things easy get a piece of wood and cut a V in the end and use this to hold the tank upright whilst you do the change. :thumb

I think ...

... there's a thread with pictures explaining how it's done, but the tank doesn't need to come off, just support it with something sturdy or it'll come down and bite you :(

You'll need to undo the multi-pin connector on the right side and the securing bolt next to it, leave the fuel pipes alone but disconnect or loosen the two black drains, then you should be able to raise the tank enough to remove the battery.

You'll find it runs badly afterwards, but a search on throttle cable seats should sort you out:augie

Arse ... just filled the bugger!!

would be the battery is the prime suspect, especially as you say it is the original one.

+1 :thumb2

Same thing happened to my '03 K1200GT - went to start it after a long lie-up (with battery regularly charged) - hardly any life in the battery.

I jump-started it from my 1150GSA (nice handy external connections :thumb2) and it ran fine.

Two Odyssey batteries now on order from Motorworks as I have been suspicious of the battery in my 100GS for a while.

PP,

If you can get the bike started again check what the charging voltage is, to make sure the alternator and regulator are okay, from memory about 14v suggests a healthy charging circuit.

though from what you've said it sounds like the batterys given up after 8 yrs, which is not too shabby.
