1150 Battery

Hi All,

The 1150 needs a new battery - she is over 3 years old, and has had a shorted battery to starter lead in the past!!!

Anyone got any views on Good/Bad batteries to fit to this?

Any info welcome.

Neil (Steptoe) fitted a BMW gell battery for me last week and the battery costs £81. He had a Hawker one in for his own bike and mentioned something about having to make some terminals or something.

May not be a straight swap, it seems.

I know what you mean, but its only about double a cheapo OE copy and about £20 more than the OE itself. The technical spec speaks for itself. It loses virtually no charge when left unattended, has massive cranking power, will not leak even if the casing breaks (in fact it will still work!), sorts the initialisation problems with ABS, is unaffected by cold, etc etc.

I reckon that seeing as all that bike is useless if you can't spin it over, then the battery is the most critical component and hence needs to be the most dependable. Then the £40 doesn't seem so bad, does it ? (in terms of value infinitely better than a set of white indicator lenses for example).

The terminals are sunk vertically into the casing, so you can buy small right angle adapters (£5 from knight batteries) or you can knock a set up yerself form whatever is lying around (on my 1100 I think I managed to get the cables to fit straight on, the 1150 is a bit more tightly packed).

I recommend it cos I want to be able to depend on the bike starting every time, irrespective of whether its been stood for 6 months without an Optimate, or the temperature is -10, or I've driven short hops with all the lights blazing, or I've done something daft and I need it to crank and crank and crank to get beyond the problem.

Ordered one day, delivered the next - seems OK so far (and it has it's own terminal posts)

MMMmmmmm - great deal!

This is versus £45 for an OE (Exide) battery - and hey - this one fits!

While I understand that people want reliability, My bike has been reliable up to now, and 3 years is a reasonable battery life.

Will the £90 battery last longer?
Will it produce twice the cranking amps?
In which way is it twice as good (apart from the smile on the salesman's face?)


I just put an OE battery on my dad's 4.0 itre Jaguar - cost £45!

I can't help feeling that we are all getting a little ripped off here!

I was shocked by the price of an Odyssey. But I bought one anyway. To answer all your questions (is it worth it, is it really better, etc): YES!

No ABS faults. No problems starting. In fact, lights on, heated grips on full, GPS attached, push the button and away we go.

Plus, it's an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery, so if you should ever drop your bike (which you will do if you ever go off road), you just pick the thing off and ride away. No need to worry about spilled battery acid, or whatever.

They also have an excellent product life. If you check the Advrider site about Odysseys, you will see that people have had them for years, without problems.

If you don't have ABS, then you could get away with a gel battery, but they're not that much cheaper, and still have a shorter life.

Oh, and I got my directly from an automotive parts wholesaler here in Holland and paid 90 euros, IIRC, while I was quoted 160 retail. So searching around can pay off.

Another big for the Odyssey - the fit and forget battery.

Worth the extra because:
1. No acid spillage even when upside down.
2. No ABS faults on cold start ups.
3. Little charge loss when left unattended - 3mths in my case.

I also had to pack the battery box out with some rubber sheet so it was a tight fit.

As for the terminal issue some people seem to get away without an extension while other mange without. I made mine with some brass strip from B+Q. No problem and well worth the effort.

I have an odyessy PC 680 fitted - and if i were you i'd save your money and fit a cheaper make - made no difference to my bike whatsoever -

ABS light never used to flash with the old BM battery -

But it does with the odyssey , not all the time, maybe once a week - and it doesn't turn over as fast for as long, as the old battery - I'll be going back to the Gel type of battery -

what gel battery would you fit steptoe? aren't they all mostly AGM construction these days?

that adaptor could be more of a f*cking abortion, but it's taking all my imagination to picture it
