My bike is kept outside and normally ridden every day for work and some weekends. Over the last few weeks it hasn't been used as the brakes needed an overhaul, the ignition loom needed a wire soldered and an MOT was required.
All sorted last Saturday so went for a ride in the afternoon. On a couple of occasions the clutch action felt odd, as though maybe something was sticking or their was a problem with the hydraulics as the resistance was different, it cleared after a while so wasn't too bothered. Today when I went to leave for work it felt odd again and wouldn't disengage fully but I got up the road and all seemed okay. As I came into work it wouldn't disengage and when I pumped the lever it suddenly lost pressure which when investigated found that one of the banjo fittings to the top of the slave cylinder was leaking.
Now, I think that the leak isn't the main problem but as a result of it so, first thing is to sort the leak and try again, but I think that I'm just putting off the inevitable gearbox removal.
Will let you know the outcome.

It sounds like loss of hydraulic pressure, nothing more.

Could be due to the loose banjo bolt, or pipe corrosion from the npipe that the banjos secures in place. No need for gearbox removal. Just the rear shock to access the slave cylinder.

the banjo corroding is a common problem, best to buy the gsa one, as thats stainless aparently, pull the clutch slave cylinder and check that the oil seal behined has not been leaking, probably just the banjo though :augie

Steptoe beats me again :blast

Picture of the pipe corrosion - it's been posted many time before.

Cheers, that makes sense, probably seeping a little then the hole suddenly got bigger.
Left the bike at work but had a quick look, saw the leak from the top of the slave cylinder so removed the three bolts but couldn't draw it right out because their wasn't enough slack in hose from master cylinder. A bit fiddly but I haven't needed to remove anything else for access so far. Will look at it tomorrow.

Cut the cable ties along the frame that secure the fluid line.
Also get a bit more slack if you remove the fork leg top nut and push the fork stanchion down so the clutch hydraulic line doesn't have to go around the fork leg :thumb
It's a fiddle getting the slave out inbetwen the swingarm and geabox and there is a knack to it - sort of twist sideways and tilt it back.

Oh yes - the other major causes of leaks are the small ali washers under the banjo, they corrode badly, so have some replacements. I renew them everytime i undo a slave cylinder banjo.

Thanks. I don't suppose BMW dealers sell the aluminium washers seperate but I'll give them a ring anyway.
