Hello all,

Just got an 1150 GS Adv deal sorted out.

Recently joined here and there is lots of (good) information to process and absorb.

I don't mean to start 12 V 1150 arguments or ask long gone questions but the search facility isn't helping so here it is:-

Does the 1150 suffer at all from final drive faiures and leaks that the 12 is teething with? Is it a different drive unit? Is it an outcome of shaving 70lb off the bike?

Sorry in advance if it's cropped up before, I'm just trying to get a grip on my new baby's history ;)

Everything can fail, and the 1150 isn't immune from failures in the final drive bearing. But you certainly don't hear about nearly as many as you do with the 1200. Whether the 1200's problems are due to the lightweight design, or just poor quality control, who knows?

Thankyou gents, took your time though, must have been gone 10 minutes then :D

:clap

Going by the rash of posts on this subject a couple of years back, final drive bearing seems to last about 30,000 usually, paralever bearings anything from 15,000 upwards. Both easy DIY jobs. 1100s seem to last longer, from what I hear.

Yip !

53K on mine so far, and no probs. :)

Well, I wonder what poor Qual' control may mean..... technician takes bearing out of packaging and fits it.....Not much to inspect or control there.....

I'd hazard a guess at poor design (stress/load/spec) or poor manufacture/materials from supplier (maybe multiple supplier - where Qual may pick the trend up!).

It makes no odds to the problem though, I'm just glad mine may be better and I sympathise with 12 owners who have been let down :(

Thanks again chaps

Final drive oil leaks seem common place on the 1150. Just had mine done again. - Thats twice this year. According to my dealer, they get a fair few in for this.

yea but thats hardly a prob , well not for most old foigies here that used to run brit bikes .... almost a daily routine of topping up oil levels :D

my gearbox has been leaking out of the rear seal for 10thou miles , just keep an eye on it , and top it up every week or so..

These final drive bearins and paralever bearings, I had to replace mine, the first time they were done and it was at around 65000KM.

the way I see it is that there is not enough travel for the rollers to roll all the way and so they wear a grove. Its a function of the design.

If we were to ride proper enduro bikes with suspension linkages e.g. yamaha WR426, then we would be replacing and servicing the bearings a lot more than we do now.

I dont want to hijack this thread, its just the above positngs are all related.

If you do change out the bearings, you need to do the re-torque 600KM (or whiat ever miles) later, just like they would get done at your first service after delivery. if you are riding a bit harder off road or twisty this might need doing earlier.

if you want to discuss further, lets start another thread about it

Hay Ewe - Loose rear end?
