Hi Folks,

Need some advice from some of the more knowledgeable folk on here please.

2001single spark 1150gs, 60k, bike run daily 60 mile commute.

Was running fine, trouble free till last week when I left her in the garage whilst we went on holiday. On my return she started up fine but only ran for half mile or so before just cutting out. Tried restarting but although I could hear the fuel pump prime she just wouldn't catch.....sometimes the pump primed several times???...Finally managed to start her but every few yards the same thing would happen. Managed to get her home, checked her over with my limited knowledge...all seemed ok. She started on the drive and ran ok. So...next day took her out again.....ran to Pontefract and back (15-20miles) no problems at all. Back to work today so this morning she started ok again and ran fine for about 3 miles before the same fault occurred. This time she just wont start at all...nearly flattened battery. RAC came out and after some various troubleshooting gave up saying he believed it was a poor connx somewhere. Just got the bike back home (as my local bike man is on holiday) and gave her a good spraying with wd40 but still same problem. I can't get anyone to look at her till later in the week. Rac reckon the fuses and relays are all ok......so......does anyone have any idea's please...Thought it might have been water in the fuel as when I parked her up before going on me hols it was very wet but RAC man reckons no as she has been running ok...

Thanks in advance.

PS...anyone know of any good mobile bike person in the Ackworth/South Kirkby area nr Ponte?

Hmmnn

Hall sensor?...I'll do a search and see what comes up...any way of confirming that?...bearing in mind my limited know how?

The fuel pump seems to sound normal...just that occasionally it will whirr away several times with a 2-3 second delay between whirrs if you follow me:nenau

Thanks

Just to add.....sometimes when she cuts out (at any revs) she will then catch again and surge slightly.....does that mean anything to you guys?

OK,...have read thru various threads on hall sensor and from the symptoms it appears this may be the problem. I have tried rotating the rear wheel with the bike in gear and ignition switched on and can't hear the fuel pump priming, although it does prime when ignition is switched on. From what I gather I SHOULD hear the pump priming when the engine is rotated manually???.....yes??

Next thing is to have the front engine cover off and peer at the sensor and maybe give it a good spray with WD40?...Is there any way I can disable the sensor so I can at least get the bike going so I can then get a used/new hall sensor fitted or am I talking b*ll***s? Thinking maybe corroded wiring from/to the sensor...just guesses really....don't wanna replace the thing if its not broken....bit expensive....but if the opinion on here is faulty hall sensor then I'll just have to bite the bullet and get the ole credit card out:eek:

Thanks again in advance folks:thumb2

Try reseating the Hall sensor connector (round one, under tank,RHS of steering head) and checking cabling to Hall sensors .
Possibly dodgy sidestand switch?.

Well I've managed to source a used hall sensor from Motorworks for £50 (the only one for an 1150 they had in stock) so gonna nip over now cos sod's law says if I delay then it'll get snapped up. Will post later hopefully to say all is sorted I hope.

Thanks again :clap

Hall sensor

Buy a new one or it will possibly go again in the middle of nowhere and you'll be really stuck.

Blimey, I don't even know what a Hall Sensor is ... BUT this sounds exactly like an issue I had with my previous R1100S. Turned out that some sort of sensor thingy on the fuel pump (or was it next to the fuel pump?) was overheating and then turning off the fuel pump which of course makes the bike "stop" ... a restart would get the fuel pump primining but not working. About an hour later it would be cool enough to restart but then the bike would run for a short time before the thing overheated again.

Mr. BMW replaced the whole fuel pump assembly (he claimed this was how they came as new and I didn't argue). Just thrown the old one away after getting rid of the S (BoxerCup rep). I was also told that there was a known issue with a small percentage of these sensors, thus I wasn't charged labour - just the cost of the pump assembly.

Sorry I can;t be specific but if the Hall Sesnor thing doesn't work then you might need to replace the fuel pump asembly - worked for me :nenau

Fuel pump

A friend had this problem with a fuel pump in Roumania earlier this year, take it out and give it a wack and off it goes for a time and then back to
square one.

Well, got me replacement hall sensor, but reading after reading through this document http://users.rcn.com/dehager/service/oilhead_hall_sensors.pdf I dont think I have sufficient mechanical skills to do the job....what is a relatively straightforward job to someone who knows what he's doing would be an all dayer for me:( and then I'd still need to call for help!

Never mind, will try to get hold of another bike 'servicer' locally to do it properly and will update this when done. Hopefully should cure this sick bike, and rider:beerjug:
Thanks for your tips people.

OK, the saga continues...:( replaced sensor...not to bad and all back together....at first it wouldn't turn over properly so removed belt and checked the alignment with the notch on the crankshaft...seems ok...made sure the OT marker was showing in the timing window. Tried turning it over...battery is still pretty weak although I've had it on a trickle charge and she'll still not fire up..ignition gives a machine gun effect noise? :mcgun Any idea's?

I'm stuck now..just connected charger up again...need to get this sorted asap as I've already taken 2 days off & work isn't happy but the bikes my only transport. All the local bike electricians are either on holiday or busy elsewhere. Can anyone suggest someone reasonably close to the WF9 area (Wakefield/Ponte/Barnsley) who is mobile and can come out at all?

Other than that I'm stuffed at the mo...Any advice gratefully received:bow

Cheers

Non start

The batteries flat, that noise is the starter motor so don't try any more charge the battery up fully first. It wont go like that and contionue you'll damaged the motor and not do the battery any good either.

Well fired up ok with jump leads off the car....hooray I thought..ran on its own for a couple of mins ok.....stopped it, restarted it...ok....quick run round the block I thought.......NOT!.....400 yds down the road it died again, just like before, as if I'd hit the kill switch.....wouldn't start again...fuel pump primes...she turns over but thats it.....pushed it home, won't start off leads now...so it doesn't seem as if it was the hall sensor at all....whaddya think guys?

Managed to start her again, running roughly with occasional attempted backfire....tried throttle reset with battery disconnected..still same....runs roughly...throttle cables positioned ok...I think the fuel pump is priming continuously although it's difficult to hear it over the engine but it sounds like it is....more searches methinks....

Maybe you told us already but:

Is the RID on or off when the engine cuts out? Kill switch, side-stand or in-gear with clutch out will stop engine and turn off RID.

With engine stopped, ignition on, switch kill switch off / on. You should hear the fuel pump prime every time.

Rid stays on when engine cuts out. kill switch operation works fine...ie pump primes when kill switched off.....

With the pump priming when it cuts out I'm starting to lean towards pump/filter probs.....the breather hoses are all ok....where exactly is the filter located?

filter is in the tank, though some remove and fit one external :thumb
