1150 Gearbox has gone bang, advice please

My 1150 GS 1999 model started to make a very quiet rattling noise about 4 days ago. On my way to work this morning I pulled out to overtake a car. Changed from 5th up into top and there was a very big bang, followed by a lovely grinding sound.

I pulled over and there was a fair amount of gearbox oil running out the bottom of the gearbox.

Even though I haven't pulled it to pieces yet I'm pretty sure it's going to need a replacement box.

I've looked through the forums in the hope I can find a company or some source to get a replacement box.

Do any of you have any suggestions? I'm in North Northumberland near the border.
 
Ive got a gearbox, it has a fault , it couldnt change down below 4th and I am breaking the whole bike. Trouble is im in NZ, let me know if you need the casing or something or other parts. R1150GS 2000, 60k Kev.

Remove the gearbox ( because no matter what has happened you're going to have to remove regardless), and then see what the problem is.

Otherwise you'll just get a dozen guesses, from the driveshaft seizing and shearing off the gearbox output shaft ( hence the gearox oil leaking out), to a failed gearbox shaft cracking the gearbox case. You won't know for sure until the box is removed.

Your bike only need a new gearbox? Just noticed somebody on TradeMe selling an 1150RT box here.
 
Bike arrived in my garage at 11 am yesterday and up on the bench, stripped and box out by 12.45 pm with no major disasters (apart from the gear indicator switch falling to bits - third one the bike has had to my knowledge).

Secondhand box fitted and the bike was up and running by 5.30 pm, old box had let go on the main shaft bearing at the clutch end and punched a nice round bearing shaped hole in the casing.

I used to own the bike and it did 37,000 miles of its total 45,000 miles in my ownership (I sold it to a third party with 40,000 miles on the clock about 18 months ago). In that time it has had the gearbox oil changed annually - using fully synthetic 80w90 GL5 oil ( Silkolene Syntran5 ).

It apparently rumbled (not loudly or badly ) for only three days before going bang. I heard it and it just sounded like clutch rattle

Thanks Neil, you did a tremendous job. I'll give it a run today but I don't anticipate any problems.

On the back of this thread I now have a knackered 1150 gearbox if anyone wants it for spares?
