Having conveyed me to Iran and back without a niggle, my trusty 1150 is not starting. Here is the situation:

Battery is charged and the engine is turning over easily.

The engine has fired for a brief second or two but then stopped firing.

The bike has fuel.

The throttle cables are properly seated.

I have tried opening the throttle while turning it over on 'choke'.

I did give it a thorough wash recently (a rare occurrence) so wonder if that might be connected.

Before I start taking out plugs and the like, any helpful suggestions from the community?

Thanks
Simon

Even though it's turning the engine over well with the starter?

Have you got a full set of warning lights? Is the RID functioning? Is the killswitch set to 'run'? Sidestand up? Bike in neutral? Any aberrant behaviour from the rev counter?

Start with basics. As has been said, killswitch, sidestand etc Fuel pump working? If not check fuse 6 and relay. Check fuse 5 (Motronic)

John

Side stand is up. Bike is in neutral. Warning lights look fine. Killswitch set to run. There is a whirring sound when I turn the ignition on - is that the fuel pump priming?
What is RID?

RID - Rider Information Display (the bit with the fuel level)

turn the key on
set the right hand switch to RUN position

put the bike on the center stand
put the bike in 5th gear

turn the rear wheel forward by hand a few full rotations

Can you hear the fuel pump come on and off when the wheel hits a certain spot?

All fuses intact. What's the process to check the relays?

I think you will find that there are two identical relays from memory the other is for the horn but do check. Swap them over and see what happens

John

if the starter is spinning the engine, then you only need to check relay 7 and fuse #5

( to make sure the motronic is powered)

if the fuel pump is spinning when you turn the switch on, that relay and fuse are likely good.

Not sure which of these is correct

Thanks mouthful and others for your counsel! Freezing outside now, and got to head out for the evening , so will resume testing in the morning and keep you posted.

Try pulling the clutch in. Everything else has been mentioned.

I'd also squirt a bit of quickstart in the induction as she'd turning over because the plugs may now be wet.

I know I'm often taken for an idiot, however, if the starter is spinning the engine, then surely it's only spark or fuel (or both) that are missing.

If it were clutch switch or stand switch the starter wouldn't turn?

Happy to be enlightened.

Hi Simon

Knowing your bikes age, mileage and it's recent and previous journeys and now washing it I suspect your hall sensor is the problem.... :D

Hall sensor is my suspect also!

Without disassembling stuff, is there an easier way to diagnose or test it?

Your test method doesn't confirm 100% it's the hall sensor.

The fuel pump can still prime with a failed hall sensor. :D

Update: the bike started this morning but is billowing thick fumes as if it is running very rich. Have not taken it on road yet as v foggy here!

How does this affect Dr Steptoe's previous diagnosis?
