Has it got a very high (overdrive) top gear?, if so you've got a std box, the low gear is really low good fore traffic as if commuting it must extend clutch life by a mile.

Someone else may be able to verify the data below but this may help:
On the 1150:
GAJ => up to 2003, silver, normal 1st, short 6th
GAE => up to 2003, silver, normal 1st, Serie (= long 6th)
GAK => up to 2003, black, normal 1st, short 6th
GAG => up to 2003, black, normal 1st, Serie (= long 6th)
GAN => up to 2003, silver, short 1st and short 6th (only GSA)
GAP => up to 2003, black, short 1st and short 6th (only GSA)
JAL => from 2003 onwards, silver, short 1st and short 6th (only GSA)
JAM => from 2003 onwards, black, short 1st and short 6th (only GSA)
JAJ => from 2003 onwards, silver, normal 1st, short 6th
JAK => from 2003 onwards, black, normal 1st, short 6th

Just checked, it's a JAM!
Can't actually ride the bike as its in bits but hopefully running soon when I fit my new piston rings that are on their way from Motorworks.

Why don't you just ring a bloody BMW dealer, like my suggestion in Post#2
It'll save all that supposition and guesswork, the VIN will tell you everything about the bike's build spec from day 1![]()

You didn't, I gave you a pretty definitive bit of advice in post 2 - just couldn't understand why so many people ask a BMW dealer last about..............their bikes/where to buy parts/how to fix their bikes etc
