I know this has been covered quite a bit in the past but I've had a read-through and I'm still not sure. So patience please!

I'm going on a long trip in April and was going to pack a rear bevel bearing and seals amongst my spares kit, as I know they can fail and my bikes' mileage is 'in the zone'. So I emailed through with a price request and they've only came back and asked me which one I wanted! Jeez, well I don't bloody know! So, which one of these is the bugger that fails? Is it:

a) rear pivot bearings X2 ?

b) The input bearing to the rear axle (bevel gear brg) ?

c) The output bearing on the rear axle (big) Crown gear brg ?

d) The output bearing on the rear axle (small) Crown gear brg ?

The lucky winner shall receive this :D , a :thumb and mucho gratitude!

Many thanks,

Pluck

PS I know the paralever bearing goes too - I've already replaced that one.

Part C - The cheapest supplier of this bearing is ??? what for it ,

BMW themselves , about £28, and they usually have them in stock ;)

it's the bevel output bearing , i'll find the bearing number in a minute

Bearing number 61917 - C3 .

Thats the bearing number, not the BMW part number

You could get bearing "D" as well, just to be on the safe side, but that only falls apart/needs replacing if you neglect the warning signs of the large output bearing begining to fail and just carry on riding

Neil, will give a better description of how to change it. for a roadside repair you will need either a couple of wedges or 'stout' screw  drivers to draw the old bearing back.
Put the new bearing on top of one of the cylinders with the engine running to heat it , making it easier to fit. Oh and don't forget the new seal.

Hope I didn't 'step on your toes' Steptoe :D :D

Look HERE , it's one i did earlier, post number 18.

A "How to replace at the side of the road" picture thread. Just remember, the secret is getting the bearing fecking hot :thumb .

It's not perfect, but it'll get you out of the shite if your in a remote place

Brilliant. Thanks Steptoe. Printed it orf and stored online in case of emergency! I absolutely :love threads like that!

For what it costs, I would just change it before you go. I did mine when it first showed signs of failure and was astonished how easy it was. Total cost summat like £45. Not worth skimping.

I thought about that but time is a bit tight tbh, and there's no evidence at all that mine is on the way out so I don't want to replace a perfectly good bearing for no reason. It's just that the bike has done 34000 miles now and taken a fair amount of abuse so, given my general history of bad luck - if I don't take the spare, it will fail in the middle of the desert!!

If you haven't any problems with your current bearing, don't change it just for the sake of it -

They can fail at any mileage, so just putting a new bearing in won't guarantee you anything, that can fail just as easily. Just take one with you, then it doesn't matter what happens, you've covered yourself .

Hi Guys

I've just read this with interest, recently I have been able to feel a rumble from the rear of my 1150gs when banked over and have been wonderin if there is somthing going or if its just the knackered back tyre i can feel.

do any of you know of symptoms of the bearing failures?

has anyone got the id number from the seal rather than BMWs part number?

just one bit of info on bearings for anyone who might buy a bearing from a distributor it is important to get a C3 grade, it will be possible to get a 61917 with no C3 suffix this would have too small an internal clearance and may fail prematurely. :nono
