Those of you out there who have had some final drive/bevel box problems, what exactly was it? Was it the big output bearing that gave up the ghost or was it the internals of the bevel box?

Cheers,

Bob

Output bearing & seal (the bits of bearing cage nick the seal and cut it to ribbons).

Oh - and the rear UJ on the driveshaft, at the same time...

Mike:)

crownwheel bearing

23500 miles .cage on big crownwheel bearing started to break up & pushed out the seal, luckily oil all over garage floor & not when riding the bike. cost aprox 50 quid for bits & did it myself.

Output bearing at 17000 miles bike just two years old, repaired as a goodwill gesture by bmw.

hi trev. is this a straight forward job. i.e like a car wheel bearing.

"They All Do That Sir"

I think we can see a definite trend developing here????

bevel box

noticed play in shaft bearing, still same after applying rear break, checked, cleaned, greased, adjusted up fine. then noticed sound of grinding when rear wheel spun. opened up case, found that balls in bearing were breaking up, bits of swarf attached to magnetic drain plug( 1cm high) everything else inside casing appeared undamaged, even taper roller bearing. have been using correct gl5 oil from halfords. 2000 gs 27000 miles.

You didn't need to do the brake "test" if it's rumbling -

a lot of times you won't have any play in the output bearing , even when it's rumbling -
