1150 Speedo Housing

In order to register and MOT my 03 1150 here I need to change the speedo dial to read in MPH. Any tips on suppliers of MPH dials would be much appreciated also.

Does anyone know if the housing is easy to open and re-attach? I dont wanna mess it up :blast

There's a company in London who refurbish clocks Trev, called something like Redial. I have seen them mentioned here and in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics magazine. Someone will be along soon who knows more about them. :)
 
You shouldn't need to change the clocks for the MOT, all you will need is MPH on the dial. Sticker kits are available and a little gearbox that fits onto the back of the speedo that will convert the clock to MPH.

Check out these guys in Wiltshire, they specialise in imports.

Flip - maybe a Euro bike originally with MPH stickers removed?? :nenau
 
Speedos

My 1150 was an import, they just changed the speedo, it's not at all hard, take off the screen grey n it and it's self explanatory lot of fiddling about but all ok. Jap grey imports usually just have stickers on the dial all ok quite legal.

same with mine - zero usage KPH speedo removed and replaced with brand new UK one. :thumb2

you have 3 choices.

put an MPH sticker on.

send it away and have the face replaced - the innards rejigged (who knows how much that would cost)

or replace it - with either a new one, old one or aftermarket dash computer wotsit. (saw one mentioned on this site recently - £75)


course you could always do what davegs suggests ad nauseum - 'stick it on ebay quick'
 
I imported my 1150GS '03 from Germany. To pass MOT I had to fit a MPH speedo and a dipped headlight conforming to UK standard. At this time I have bought both from new in Germany via BMW dealer as they have been cheaper than here. I've paid around 80€ for the speedo and 130€!!! for the light. However, would I be in the same situation again, I might consider used parts instead. Maybe worthwhile to give James Sherlock a ring, £40 for used speedo and £60 for a dipped headlight sounds fair!

Ta but all that sounds a bit drastic - think I'll take my chances with a sticker kit and try and cheap-ass my way to a pass :D
 
I was not aware of a speedo being a testable item, you could always fit a cheap wireless pushbike one onto the dash though.

It isn't - but is a good thing to have regardless. I'm not sure what the reaction of the police would be if you get pulled for speeding. or god forbid, are involved in an accident.

go the 'sticker' route.

However the DVLA wants some kind of evidence that the bike is conforming to UK registration law. This applies to speedo and dipped light as well unfortunately.

"That a speedometer has been fitted which is capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously, or by operation of a switch. The speedometer must be marked up to the maximum speed of the vehicle, with graduations at 1, 2, 5, or 10mph, and with values at intervals not exceeding 20mph."

That sounds to me like a sticky overlay would be completely fine, you just need to pay a garage to certify that it has been done, on some headed notepaper. An overlay would be better than sticky numbers as that will have the graduations.

They are available on eBay, but it looks like you'll have to ask them for a BMW one as there aren't any for auction at the moment.
