Hi,

I've an 03 GS1150 (38,000km) with a gearbox that seems like it's becoming a bit stiff. The changes are even less smooth than normal and I'm not sure if it's wear or something more sinister. It seems particularly bad from cold.

I've only got about 3wks warranty left so will probably take it to the dealer. Only prob. is the dealer experiance here is far from satisfactory and just wanted some pointers from anyone that's experianced this.

Thanks

I'd check the oil level first - easy to do - low oil could make the changes harder.

It'll always be worse when it's cold even if there's no problem, and of course it's never perfect on an 1150 and they all differ slightly so you can expect your dealer to say "They all do that, Sir".......

A couple of things to consider before panicking:

The gear linkages down by the foot peg can get a bit gummed up so it's a simple job to undo them and regrease the ball and sockets. there is a small wire clip that needs to be removed before you can pop the socket off and clean inside. I'd certainly try that.
The other thing I found makes a didfference is using a good synthetic gearbox oil. I notices a marked improvement when I switched over to full synth oil.

Good luck

Thanks guys,

I'll go and do some checking - taking it back the dealer is just too much like hard work. Customer service is a foreign word down here.

This is the bit Gecko is referring to with the linkage...

What they said, had the same on mine, but couldn't get the thing apart so SPC replaced on Warranty, they know about it and no quible swap on it :thumb

It's likely to be the linkage -

No good just squirting WD40 onto it, you have to remove the bolt, and it's the bush inside the pivot that dries out and stiffens .

you don't have to remove the footrest hanger, there is room from behind to get an allen key into the bolt, it's only a 10 minute job .
