Help..... l need some advice from those who might know,
My 02 1150 gs with 58k miles has developed a problem when hot.........it sometimes wont change down to a lower gear (mostly 3rd to 2nd) It feels the same as if you were trying to change down a gear when you are already in 1st.
I have stripped down the gear linkage and cleaned and lubricated it but no joy. Any advice???

When last change gear oil ? How's clutch?
When drain oil have look for flakes, and what concerns clutch is it fully disengage ?

It does sound like a sticky gear change lever. When you cleaned up the gear linkage did that include the pedal pivot/nylon bush or just the two little ball joints?

It's rarely the linkage. It's usually the gearlever, bush and lever insert that's seized.

I only have the bike since Oct 14 so not sure when gear oil changed, it did have a full service in Aug 14! Clutch seems to be good, but will change the gear oil and look for flakes.

Cleaned the linkage and the pivot bush's and the little ball joints, still the same!

When it happens - have you tried letting the clutch in and out and see if it clears? Or try going back up one then down again? Is it always 3rd to 2nd? Any problems going up through the box?

Yes l tried changing back up one and or two and down again, tried slipping the clutch out slowly (works sometimes) Its not always 3rd to 2nd but that is the most common one. No problems going up the gears except when its after l cant change down!

Calm down!

The lever you change gear with can get clogged with oil and road grime. It might need a clean.

Change the gearbox oil too. It's easy. I'll check back tomorrow.

I'm not saying your bike is not fecked, I'm just saying keep calm and try the basics first. Do a search the sticky gear lever.

Not sure which metal insert you mean but if its the one with the allen key that goes through the two carbon top hats in the linkage then yes.
The top hats have to be removed and greased - the bolt clamps the top hats and the lever swivels on the top hats - if they are seized in the gear lever it limits the lever movement and doesn't allow the selector drum in the gearbox to re-index for the fully fit the next gear

I had trouble with mine so i fitted new top hat bushes and spindle cleaned the two ball and sockets and all is good [there was only slight wear in the bushes]

Hi guys, took some good advice from your suggestions,

I changed the gearbox oil, l replaced the "top hats" because they were a loose fit on the bolt and there was wear on the bottom of them, l think it was because the bolt was not tight enough to keep the linkage rigid.

Result...... precise easy gear changes now.

Thanks! :aidan
