Hello GS'ers worldwide!
I'm a member of BMW Owner's Of Saferiders(BOSS), the official BMW Motorcycle Club in the Philippines. I'm riding an 04 R1200C Montauk. However, I am eying to buy an 03 1150GS with 14,000 miles to it. You see from where I live, its GS country with most of the roads.
I have read in several GS fora that early owners of the 1150's, circa 99-01, have been unhappy with the stock gearing of the 1150 especially the 2.82:1 ratio in the first gear. I read that it would be virtually impossible to ride it at 5mph without constantly fanning the clutch. In fact some of them went to the extent of changing the final drive to the 1100's 3.0:1.
Did BMW do something about this in the latter models, say 02-03?
By the way in a test ride, I also found the power of the 1200's lower gears inadequate. I prefer more grunt in the lowers considering the road and traffic conditions in the Philippines.
