Just noticed (bike due for MOT) that the main beam on my 1150GS isn't working. Its a HID unit that came with the bike. Is there anything obvious I should check before taking it to an expert?

Swap it back to a halogen or an LED before the MOT as HID is now a fail on a motorbike where it wasn’t originally fitted.

I think that's an often discussed technicality, I never actually heard of a bike failing, has anyone?

My Super Ten passed with twin HID's earler this year Paul, when did the regs change?

Stoney, switch the cables between the ballasts assuming you have the dip HID'd too and see which light comes up. Will identify if it's the lamp or the power supply.

Clean all terminal contacts from bulb to battery.
Replace the relay.
Bypass the handlebar switch with some spare wire.

Hopefully, one of the above will fix it. Did for me .

My MOT tester spotted the ballasts I’d left behind and he double-checked that the lights were LEDs before he commented that HIDs would have been an auto fail so, technically not a fail, but would have been.

From the most recent MOT manual.

Game,set & match !

Can't argue with that

My MOT garage said he would fail mine when I showed them to him 2 months prior to this year's MOT

So I have removed them and gone back to H4 bulbs
