I decided to see if BMW would be nice and supply some goodwill in connection with my transmission failure. I loaded the complete transmission into the car yesterday morning and drove down the Vines in Guildford.

You should have seen their faces as I struggled in with my transmission under my arm :-) The service manager thought it was a fold-up bike at first? That was a little worrying.

I explained what had happened and told them that I had researched this failure thoroughly. I asked them if there was any chance of a goodwill settlement. After some sucking in of breath, they entered the details into a computer terminal and got an instant refusal!

Hang on I said, that's an automated reply. I'm not accepting that! I want a human to make a decision not a bloody machine.

More sucking in of breath and scratching of heads. The chief mechanic appears. He suggested that they work out the cost of the entire job as if they had the whole bike. In other words, how much the complete job would cost if done at Vines. As I had done about 60% of the work, they would try a manual claim and say that the customer was willing to pay 60% of the labour costs if BMW would pay for the parts, about £200 worth and the rest of the labour. The 40% labour required is to dismantle the gearbox and fit a new shaft, bearings and seals. This is a little more involved and I'd be happier if they did that part.

I was very impressed by the mechanic. He knew the fault and sympathised with me. He said that they don't get many people arriving at the shop with a BMW transmission under their arm :-)

So, off to work I go feeling quite happy and await a call. :augie

This afternoon the call came from Vines saying ... BMW will cover the cost of the replacement parts and the labour on the gearbox rebuild.

Result! A little faith has been restored. :thumb2

Yes, well done.

A very reasonable approach with realistic expectations that seem to have been exceeded by Vines. Good result and well done Vines.

Well done, I wish all bike manufacturers and dealers were like that.

Take heed Yamaha (Wr450 starter bearing fault).:oonyack

I'm very happy to have got a favourable response from the dealer and BMW.

I have to thank the mechanic for getting involved. Without his input, it might have been a different story.

Thanks also for the help I received from the guys on the forum here. Cheers all :-)

I loook forward to meeting up with some of you.
