12,000 mile service = £320. Correct ? Fair ?

Well, having done 10,200 miles on my F800 since last July, it's due its' 12,000 mile service.

It had its' 6,000 at 7,500 and will be over 13,600 by a little by the time of its' 12,000 miler.

I've been quoted £320.96. Now as a sum of money, that's a lot to me. However, it might represent a fair price for the type of service it is. I don't know.

Apparently it's an annual service plus brake fluid, air filter and valve clearances and service light re-sets etc. Obviously the first three any fool can do but the valve clearances I don't know about. Also, for 3 or so hours in the workshop and having the "BMW Serviced" stamp in my book (along with all previous works being BMW), is this good value for money and is it better for potential future re-sale than having me or any other Johnny doing it and scribbling in the book ?

Has anyone an opinion ?

How old is the bike, sounds reasonable to me, but you could get it done independently cheaper

I've recently had my 12000 service done and it cost me about £250 inc Vat. Cant remember exactly but can find out tomorrow when I get home. This was carried out at Chandlers in Hove (actually)

April 2009. I understand an independant might do it cheaper - if unable to re-set or do diagnostics - but don't think the difference is worth not having the 'done-by-a-BMW-dealer' marks in the book. To b e honest, I don't think there is a decent independant any closer to me than Norwich which is 50 miles from me.

Just curious as to what others experiences and opinions were.

I was quoted the same at my dealer. Didn't go for it in the end as i decided to let warranty slip.

As you say - oil and brakes easy. For info, for them to do the valve clearance checks they would not need to change the oil. For peace of mind you could have the service done minus the oil and brakes and still get a stamp in the book, maybe keep receipts for the parts you use for future reference...

I would query it if I was you, I am using the 1200GS servicing as a reference and I assume the 800 is similar,

Service 12,000. Every thing in the annual is included in the 12,000 service unless the brake fluids need replacing, which on the 1200GS (04 Model) is every 2 years.

Valve clearances are part of the normal service, which are done at both 6,000 and 12,000 so they should not be an additional charge.

I just had a quote from Bahnstomers and CW for a 12,000 service and MOT on my 1200GS and they quoted me £275 / £270 respectively and the independent dealer who I normall go to quoted me £219

Sounds like £320 is ok all in with parts VAT etc. I could get it done for less (though gawd knows where near me) but have more embuggeration and not get the service re-sets and BMW stamp.

On a 800 all the airbox,faux tank,injectors,linkages,cam covers need taking off and a new cam cover gasket is needed each time, adding a fair degree of cost and complexity to the job, over a simple job on a 1200

I think the stock price for a 24k service on an 800ST (final drive belt needs replacing too) is about £800, compared to a lot less on a 1200 bike, about £400 and somewhere in between £400 and £800 for a 24k on a 800GS

Now you mention it, didn't think about the 800 having a completely different engine...... so I suppose with all the extra work then maybe the price is not to bad.....

At my local dealers the service is "menu" servicing if you don't have the valve clearnces done then its a lot cheaper.
Just had the 18,000 mile service done earlier this year on my 800GS including valves (didn't have them done at 12,000) and fork oil change £350 ish but I had had the brake fluids done at 12,000.
On my previous 800 didn't have the valve clearances done until 24,000 and on both bikes no shims have been fitted!

Recently had my 24 K service,
reprogrammed my alarm remotes and a loan bike to play on for the day (had one of thoes F800 GS thingies )

as you can see, off with the rocker as standard at 24.

From experience that's a fair price, especially if it includes a loaner.

The valves are required to be done at 12k on a cold engine so your bike would have to stand for sometime to cool down. I went to an "Independent" for a 12k service and it was in for less than 2hrs. At the time I didn't realise that the valves had to be done. When I asked what had been done he simply replied "serviced in accordance with manufacturers specifications" on the receipt. Obviously the valves had not been checked as it is around a 4hr job.

Just had the valves checked at the 18k service, as a safeguard, at Robson's. Asked him to replace the plugs, although not required until 24k, but I thought as the whole top of the bike, faux tank, battery, bodywork etc had to come off it made sense. They gave me a brand new 12 plate F800gs as a loaner. Dropped the bike off at 10:00am, my phone rang at 11:30am with the mechanic mentioning that the rear brake pads, although serviceable possibly would not make it to 24k so I authorised them to replace the pads. Phone went again around 12:00pm, again the mechanic, mentioning that the rocker gasket was weeping. I had never even noticed this. As this was a recognised problem and BMW had brought out a modified gasket it was replaced free of charge. All other 18k service items were done with the exception of the brake bleeding as I had had that done previously and I collected the bike at 4pm as arranged. It had also been washed. Total price, including all materials and parts - £297

If your bike needs the brake fluid changing then £320 seems a fair price.

You may want to check what they've done - that's a fair bit over. 6000 is an oil change and some checks (none inside the engine) Mine was about £120 which i think was a bit steep...

it makes me laugh - you go out and buy a bike that you can't afford to service, don't know how to service, haven't researched the forward costs of maintenance or running costs - but its ok - cos you can brag to your mates down the pub how you've got a BMW

if you can't afford it all - don't buy it.

It seems a lot in a oner... but have you worked out what you have saved over said mileage in petrol compared to another bike.

To be honest I have found the dealer service prices not much more than it cost to get my Yamaha serviced, with the bonus of a loan bike, and saved a fortune in petrol.

Just by a quick reckon up being generous to my Yamaha and mean to the F I reckon I saved £280 in petrol, the service probably cost me £80 to £100 more for the F, but get a loan bike.

Bargain in my book.
