Hello all,

Thought I’d summaries my experience of the 12,000 mile service.

Bit of background… Following an off on my now dead Honda SP1 in July of this year I was told by the better half to get off sports bikes. So off I trundled down to Allan Jefferies for a bit of a nosy. Whilst there I spotted an ’07 GS1200 non ABS, heated grips with full luggage and 9,000 miles. After a bit of bartering, but still paying a premium for buying from a BMW dealer, the bike was mine. The bike is used daily and since July I have clocked up a further 4,500 miles. As it had its 6,000 service at 9,000 I decided to try and pull the service schedule back inline and get the bike serviced 1,500 miles earlier. Well I’m glad I did! The reason(s) why…

Summary of work done
1 x warranty - replaced rear disc as original had warped
1 x warranty – rear calliper sticking
1 x warranty - set of new rear pads – these were non existent after 4,500 miles probably down to the warped disc and sticking calliper
1 x warranty - gearbox bearing replaced
1 x recall - FPC
4 x sparkplugs

For a bike with only 13,500 miles on the clock I was surprised at the amount of work needed, especially the gearbox! However, is it normal that the sparkplugs needed replacing at such a low mileage :nenau ? What would cause plugs to wear out so fast considering that they are scheduled to be changed at 24,000 miles?

Summary of service from Allan Jefferies
Bill came to £223.70. Had an f800gs for 1 week whilst gearbox was being done so no complaints there. I found Michael in service ok and relatively pleasant to deal with. However, his sidekick Dan Scott could do with going on a customer service course. He reminded me of the ‘computer says no’ sketch from little Britain – not really bothered with helping you and when effort was required he let you know that effort was required! I had no progress calls from the service department whilst my bike was with them although I did call then at 16:00 most days for an update.

They replaced the sparkplugs without informing me first and then tried to charge £17.00 +VAT labour and £29.92 +VAT for the plugs. I though this was unreasonable as sparkplug checks form part of the service so was given a discount on labour/parts.

I have an Autocom and Garmin 660 which I installed. It took me ages to route all the wires correctly so that everything was functional and looked neat butfrom the looks of it the system had to be removed whilst the bike was stripped to get to the gearbox. All I can say is that they have bodged the re-installation of both the Autocom and Garmin – it looks like a right dog’s dinner with wires all over the place. I hope that this isn’t typical of their work and that they spent a bit more time putting my bike back together after the gearbox fix!

So all in all I’m left feeling that the BMW service experience is a bit average for which I'm disappointed... The warranty will be up for renewal in 7 months and, if I decide to keep the bike, will be renewing it as it’s probably just paid for itself in one swoop.

Would I go around the world on this bike? Yes, but the route would be plotted taking BMW dealer locations into consideration!

I concur - he was the same when he worked at Motorcycle City in Shipley before they went bust. Much prefer to deal with Michael or Paul.

However, Jefferies are by far the best dealers I've dealt with, although a bit on the expensive side and sometimes slightly aloof.

Glad it’s not just me then.

It’s just a shame that the little things which cause dissatisfaction are the one you remember.

To be fair to Jefferies, the lady who organised my courtesy bike was spot on and would’ve bent over backwards to help. Michael even offered to keep the shop open late so that I could get to from York to theirs to collect my bike. :thumb

More than happy to pay a premium if I get a premium, polished service. I’m going back tomorrow as Dan ‘voided’ my payment instead of processing it + I need to get the book stamped. I’ll show them the Autocom mess and see what they have to say.

If it's the fit, young one with black hair in the 'service' dept......................you'd have been well happy if she bent over backwards:augie:D

Though the ‘bend over backward’ comment may generate a couple of responses!:yelrotflm

No, it was the mature lass. I’ve seen the young one walking about, not experience her service yet, but its early days and a couple more inevitable warranty claims may sort that out!:thumb2

DanScott

got very good at sorting my claim out once I wrote a letter to customer services and did a bit of complaining, full refund and PDQ too once they got involved, if you are not happy get them involved I have found Mondial recovery and BMW Customer services to be excellent as are dealers in Europe, UK ones dont seem to be of the same standard, just my 2 pence worth based on 4 breakdowns in the warranty period 2 being in europe.:augie:blagblah

Tell you what, let's change the question slightly........

Will you go around the world on this bike?

:augie

Spark plug replacement at 12k ... what a rip off, if we were still using Tetra-ethyl lead then i could understand why they were possible changed.
Get down there and demand your hard earned wonger back.... you didn't request them changed & it's not on the PMI to be changed.

Regards

Probably not round the world, but that's not the point. Me and the missus are planning a pretty long trip around Europe next year which was one of the reasons for getting the bike in the first place…Does that count?

It’s been mentioned many time here before, and without wanting to drag the same-old-same-old up, that amount of warranty work on a 2.5 year old,13,500 miles £10k bike doesn’t really instil confidence - especially as it was meant to be prepped by a reputable dealer 3.5 months ago under the approved used scheme. Yes, things go wrong, that's why they whack a warrant on it…But when you have paid x-amount for a bike you don't expect some arsey service guy to make you feel that you're the problem... just my 2p worth…

The prep probably involved giving it a clean and charging the battery, knowing that as it has a warranty ......

Not exactly equivalent I know, but how do you feel about the BM's build quality and reliability compared to your SP1? I've had GS's for nine years now, but still fondly remember my last VFR, not only for its performance but also its quality feel. My first two GS's, new 2000 and 2003 1150s were much more solidly built than the last couple of 1200s I've had.

I'm now also thinking of getting an SP2 for weekend fun:)

John, I think you're right....

Heatedgrips, I’m a bit of a Honda fanboy and I absolutely loved my Sp1. If it wasn’t for her-in-doors I’d have another sat in the garage now. At current prices they are a bargain £3-4k for a minter. I originally wanted to keep it and get a tiger for touring but ended ditching it in early summer and writing it off... It was a tough choice between a new VFR800 in white, a second-hand blackbird or the GS which I have now.

The build quality was typical Honda, second to none. Everything oozed quality at no expense and apparently they lost money on everyone... If you see one have a look at the welds on the frame near the top yoke and compare them to the ham-fisted welds on other bikes... I especially enjoyed taking the fairing off for a proper clean and seeing the ‘HRC’ letters cast on the engine. Servicing was a piece of piss and getting to the clutch/gearbox wasn’t a 6 hour job ;-) In fact the only consumable during the 10,000 miles (bar the oil and filters during service) were a new set of friction plates for the clutch – the SP’s are particularly snatchy and you need to slip the clutch a bit when moving offa. £70 from Colin Appleyards and 30min later the job was done...

It was a very, very focused ride and it would bite you if you took the piss! I think the SP2 was tamed a bit via the fuel mapping and a stiffer swinging arm but it is still a bit of a beast.
I like the Sp2’s but you can’t get them in red/black... Once the other half has ‘forgotten’ about my off I’ll start dropping hints about another SP...

Faith restored...

Been to Allen Jefferies this morning and it’s only fair to say that the level of service was as should be expected i.e. much, much improved :thumb2. Michael looked at the Autocom and agreed that it wasn’t up-to standard. The problem was dealt with professionally and we came to an agreement on how to resolve the issue which also saw the cost of the spark plugs and some service labour covered :clap.

Top marks to Michael :thumb2 and if any of you guys have a service issues at Allen Jefferies then have a word with him and I’m sure things will get sorted. I’m hoping that this was just a blip and things will be different for the next service... should be in about 5 months...

On another note Dan looked a bit sheepish so I'm guessing that some staff members maybe visitors to this forum. At least the young black haired lass has probably now had a confidence boost, or may now feels the need to hide from certain members of this forum :yelrotflm

going back to getting stuff or services while still under warranty. Ive just put les wassel hids on, do you think they will say that negates my warrenty ,having put them on ?:nenau

If the Hid lights damaged the headlight surround they'd probably argue the point, if the engine self destructs due to a dropped valve, they shouldn't.

As far as your bike's concerned and the amount of warranty work, well,it's second-hand. Who's to say it has'nt had the nuts thrashed off it,been generally abused and left out in all weathers? Buy a new one next time.:) Thrash the nuts off it,generally abuse it and leave it out in all weathers, then say nowt when you trade it in :augie

As for A.J's,I've had 3 bikes from them in the past 18 months,an '01 F650gs,rear caliper replaced under warranty (on a 7 year old bike!) then an '06 R1200s,final drive oil seal replaced under warranty (bike had 16,000 miles on it) and now an 09 12gs. I've found everyone in there helpful and friendly,I've had good trade-in deals and good service for the bikes, for parts and for clothes etc.
They would'nt get my dosh otherwise, simple as.

As for the young lady, just tell her you think she's gorgeous and that you'd like to take her out to dinner. Then, when she tells you to "swivel".... leave A.J's,turn left, walk up past the cycle shop and chuck yourself in't Leeds-Liverpool Canal. I did.......Dan from the service department dragged me out. Life's a bitch.:)
