My 2005 (55) R1200 GS has had it's 1,000 it's 6,000 & is now due a 12,000 service.Williams,Manchester quoted £172 (they would not let me change oil & filter & take off & clean my calipers & pads, non ABS brakes) & stamp my book.At the 6,000 service I did all this & they stamped my book!!!???
I have been riding for over 50 years on the roads & in Trials perhaps I do not have enough Experience?
Allan Jeffries said it would be major service & wanted £283!!!!!!!!!!!
I would welcome comments from BOTH Dealers but doubt they would have the courtesy to reply.
Sensible comments would be also welcome from UKGSER's

Ive just had my 6000 service done by Allan Jefferies who charged me £170.35.

Labour was charged at a rate of £28.00 per hour which when compared to car servicing is not that bad really.

I don't really see how a dealer can stamp a service book carte blanche when they haven't carried out all the work concerned.

However, full service history does not necessarily mean that the service book has to be stamped by a dealer. as long as you can provide evidence that the vehicle has been properly serviced then I can't really see a problem.

To retain warranty and service history, the vehicle must be serviced by a suitably qualified person and to the manufacturers specifications.

I did this with my Renault Clio and had a warranty claim dealt with by Renault UK without any problem. ( I am a fully qualified vehicle engineer)

You should therefore be able to service the vehicle yourself providing you are suitably qualified and can prove this should it be necessary. For instance, if you have attended a recognised course in motorcycle maintenance, this may qualify you to carry out such things as an oil change and brake service etc. You would need to check this with the appropriate college etc.

You do not need to be a fully qualified engineer to carry out simple service items such as oil changes/ brake pad replacement etc.

Where specialist equipment is required, you should then be able to arrange for a dealer to carry out that work only and you will be given an invoice to this effect.

Keep all receipts/invoices etc and I don't think there will be a problem.

I intend to allow Jefferies to carry out all servicing up to the end of the warranty period ( probably 12000 miles) and then do the vast majority of the work myself keeping receipts etc.

Personally, if I was buying a second hand bike/car, I would be much more impressed by an enthusiastic seller who presented me with a wad full of receipts for service parts and a list of maintenance work than some stamp in a book.

A beautifully presented bike with a wad of maintenance records will always fetch a higher price than a shed with a fully stamped service book. Any slight loss from a dealer on part ex should be more than compesated for by the savings on labour charges etc.
