just been out for a blast stopped at one of my rellies for a cuppa ,returned to bike , it won't start , flat battery its an 05 1200 ,id just done 20 miles, no warning lights no loose connections , phoned bmw breakdown ,bit slow in responding , finally persuaded a kindly stranger to give me a push and bump started it , got home ok , turned off the ignition , thought i'd try and start immediately, click click click, battery is dead , i use the bike regularly at least once a week its only done 12000 miles , i assume the alternator is charging as there is no warning light i guess the battery is knackered but surely this is not acceptable , back to the dealers on tuesday [ not impressed ] give me back my 1150

Had 2 batteries go on my 02 1150, put a Hawker on in the end,(number 3) so if one goes on my 1200 so be it.
Always stand it with the Optimate connected, specially if it's only used once a week. :rob

Battery problems

I sympathize - I have given up with the stock battery and fitted a HAWKER ODYSSEY BATTERY PC535GS supplied from Motorworks (very nice people and excellent customer service). I just thought it a bit crazy to have to connect a charger to the battery every night.
I know it's galling to have to invest £80+ for a new battery (and another £50+ for the recommended charger), but I just got fed up with worrying that the bike was going to fail to start for one reason or another - and it usually did at the most inconvenient times.
If you decide to replace your battery with the ODYSSEY, it is quite a simple process to fit the new one, but a bit of a fiddle as you need to alter the way that the +'ve lead meets the battery terminal. I've been keeping an eye on the capacity of the new battery over the past few weeks and it keeps a regular and static charge of 12.8 volts whilst giving me confidence that the bike will start every time! Let's hope I'm right!

battery problems

Same story, use the bike at least once a week. About a month ago I noticed that the motor turned slower when starting. Then one morning it was jumpstart time...2005 1200 with 18000 km's. Tried to push-start with quite a serious downhill in front of my house, second, third and fouth gear...nothing she would not start. Had to phone my mate, he rides an R1 and he did not spare me any sideways BMW reliability remarks. Asked the agents about this and was smartly informed to keep the battery charged myself (whoopdy feckin doo!!). Have had lost of scrap in my life, therefore I do own a charger. I was just hoping that this bike would spare me this type of crap. :nenau

Looks like the battery life is just on 2 years. Mine was fine till now. Bike used once a week - but needs a charge every second week. I guess the battery is shot - replacement due. Is there anywhere in SA that stocks the HAWKER ODYSSEY BATTERY PC535GS?

A Hawker battery has to be the best solution. Why the lead acid models that BMW fit are so bad I do not know, but they are! You shouldn't need to buy a special charger for a Hawker, as long as you never run it totally flat. If you just want to top it up, use a standard charger, but if you do run it flat, you need a high current charger.

The good thing is though, that unlike lead acid batteries, the Hawker is not damaged (so they claim!) by a total discharge.

You should always use an optimate when stopping for a cuppa :thumb :D

1200 battery

just to tidy this thread up i took my 1200 to my local dealers [cannon bmw of braintree essex] and they charged the battery and then tested it and confirmed that one of the cells had exploded, they replaced battery under warranty, and also updated the software in the ecu foc , i must say that ive dealt with cannons for a few years now and found them very accomodating, thats a enough free ads for them but they are very helpful

Just found this battery and fitting kit for the 1200Gs listed on Flea Bay

Having read a couple of threads on how Tossers had to alter the wiring etc to fit this sort of thing thought it could be useful.

There are 3 still available, there were 4 but it seems someone has taken the plunge :D
