thanx for all the replies .
i asked a friend to get to bmw today and get some oil for the rear end drive .. and they said we dont do gear oil . we only have for our workshop we dont sell to customers ., go to places like halfords..
well i went and they dont have 70/140 either..

Try Bahnstormer Motorrad near to Alton in Hampshire. Ask for Castrol SAF-XO.

They have plenty for sale in Litre bottles. You wont need any more than one.

i put the hole think together and I'll give it another 2 weeks before i go and check it again for the play( if its getting a worse) and any sipping of oil .

THANK YOU for all the answers and suggestions.
i wonder if anyone has a good one to check the spline bit, if there is any play at all ..

WHY cant i pm people ??
I'll update here with what i find.
thanks a lot

I know this sounds an incredibly stupid question to some people, but given the following symptoms, would you suggest I may be looking at final drive problems or direct my attention somewhere else..

Firstly Im comparing a 58 plate 1200GS with about 2000 miles on it, to a loan bike which is 09, with 800 miles on it.

The 58 plate (called my bike from now on!!!) vibrates excessively, which i can feel through the footpegs.

There is a small amount of play in the back wheel when rocked in the vertical plane, err from side to side. Theres also the same amount of movement when rocked from side to side by holding tops and bottoms of the wheel. It's not much and i cant measure it, but its there!!I have also noticed when rolling on and off the throttle there seems to be a massive thump form backwheel\errr somewhere, rearwards, as if SOMETHING has masses of play in it.

I've also noticed that on anything other than smooth roads it does tend to feel quite twitchy...(NOT tyres as new and at correct pressures as well as not squared off!)

OH and finally burning clutch smell, and no i do absolutely not rag the tits off it, that would be in normal use

Errr Thats it, except to say that i KNOW THE LOAN BIKE IM ON HAS LOTS LESS MILES ON IT, BUT SURELY 2 BIKES OF SUCH SIMILAR AGE AND MILAGE SHOULD NOT BE SO DIFFERENT UNLESS ONE OF THEM HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT????.ah well never mind huh!!!:beer::beer::nenau:hide

Mark,

I had the same symtoms as you, except for the burning clutch smell, and after almost getting thrown off my bike when the back wheel "stepped out" in the fast lane of the M4 (on very gradual lefthand bend) I got the bike delivered via BWM assist to the nearest dealer, who promptly diagnosed a f-cked FD bearing.

In my opinion, get it checked out by the dealer immediately. Loosing control on any road (let alone a motorway) because of a failed bearing should not happen, but in the case of BWM's it does, and it could be prove to be lethal....

(I assume that given your bike is a "58 plate then it is still under warranty)
