1200 GS Gear train backlash

2008 GS With the bike on the centre stand and the engine dead and 1st gear selected what is the acceptable backlash from the engine to the rear wheel measured at the circumference of the rear tyre.

Not measured it but I guess it's about 2" of backlash. 64,000 on the clock

Just measured mine and i'm not bragging at 2.5 inches at 13000 miles. Just changed from one of those chainy drive things and was a bit concerned. I had an R80ST four years ago but I can.t remember that far back. (Age thing)

There are so many links in the shaftdrive train, that sort of backlash is inevitable with splines, clutch/input shaft, inputshaft/layshaft, layshaft/outputshaft, outputshaft/driveshaft, driveshaft/pinion, pinion/crownwheel.

There's six, all with no more than 0.5mm each which then gets magnified by the radius of the wheel. The problems occur when one gets excessive!

I think the drive dogs on the side of each gear have this clearance to allow easier selection of each gear. The gear teeth themselves are in constant mesh.
