Does the later 1200 GS have a service light that has to be reset by the dealer?

Is there an alternative method to reset the service light without the BMW equipment? On some cars it's possible to hold the mileage reset button and then switch on the ignition which resets the service light.

Interested to know because I like to do all my own maintenance and think that a 911 to reset the service light is an expensive option.

if you are self servicing then the 911 will pay for itself wont it?

It's mandatory that the service indicator on a car can be reset without special tools. That does not, unfortunately, apply to bikes, so there is no way (that I know of) to reset the indicator.

The hex tools GS911 device can be used with a personal computer (or most cellphones if using the Bluetooth version) to reset the service indicators on BMW motorcycles. The only other compatible device is a dealer-only BMW GT-1 system.

Bit of a pain having to fork out almost £300 just to turn off the service light. Could just leave it on I suppose or join the BMW club.:blast

I thought somebody on the forum mentioned before that disconnecting the battery for 30+ minutes reset it ?

Maybe I imagined it :)

I fully endorse the 911 as not only can it reset the servie reminder but it can do a great deal of other things too! Its already helped my mate sort out his R1200GS, which was running awful, and its certainly a great bit of kit to diagnose faults on the bike.

I understand what you mean - £300 is a lot of wonga but it does other things too!

If you wanna save yourself £300 (less a bottle of wine) I`ll reset it for ya but you would have to travel to me of course!

Used mine on four different 1200's so far (two my own) since I bought it, it has already paid for itself and also diagnosed lambda probe failure and is used to calibrate and test during servicing, reset both service indicators and date/clock.

£300 divided by the number of services I have done makes it a bargain IMO.

A GT-1 (if you could get one - avoid chinese ebay copies) would cost you several thousand pounds, but they are dealer only and not retail items.

Interested to know, can you use the GS911 to set up the system to read when a new tyre pressure monitor is fitted?

Had mine for four years, paid for itself on the 1200 with the phone version available for on-road, and now I have a 650 so it works on that too - maybe someone with a 911 nearby can help out ( I would pop over but..:augie).

I would assume that the fitting of a new TPM would be handled by the TPM module itself just like a blutooth as in "oooh look, thats the signal I want to read, its the right sort of parameters"

Tell me, if you do all your own "servicing" how do you recalibrate the idle motors without a 911 or even turn them off so they don't interfere when you balance the throttle bodies ?

Or are you calling an oil and filter change a service ? :D

No, that is component/module encoding to the network on the motorcycle, and is very different to service tasks as it writes to the ecu of the controller in question rather than just acting as a read-only device or making a permitted change of adaptive variable in software.

Or in laymans terms, take it to your dealer.

My bike is a K1200s and yes I do all my own servicing and maintenance such as when the cam chain climbs round the crankshaft sprocket and the front wheel carrier ball joint has to be changed. Managed to get by with BMW diagnostic equipment so far but understand that it is required when new tyre pressure sensors are required.

Now interested in getting a GS because I think that the riding position would be more comfortable with less weight on my wrists. The query about switching off the service light is me thinking ahead. Being a mechanic, it goes against the grain to let anyone else work on my bike.
