.......and even a new battery (there was a bike shop beside where I broke down!) wouldn't start it.

Sorry - I thought you said it had a new battery fitted.

Precisely my thoughts so I passed on the offer. Anyone recommend me a more reasonably priced battery in Ireland?

Bike shop guy at breakdown scene just put a new battery in to see if it made a difference (which it didn't). But the old battery went back in before it went off in the recovery van.

New battery was flat as well, then. It's a myth that they come fully charged from new.
